Andrea Klein Obituary

Andrea Klein, age 71, gently passed away at home in Rancho Bernardo on Friday, April 4, 2014. Born in 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, Andrea was the daughter of two respected schoolteachers, Beatrice and Barr Forrest. After graduating from Elmont Memorial High School, where she was recognized as an exceptional student, Andrea went on to earn a B.Ed. degree from the University of Connecticut.
In 1972 Andrea relocated to San Diego with her then husband and three boys. During her early years on the West Coast, she was instrumental in launching the Westwood Club Preschool and could often be found strumming her guitar and leading the children in song.
In 1986 Andrea married Dennis Klein, thus beginning their twenty-eight-year journey together. Following her time as a paralegal with a local law firm, Andrea returned to school in 1995, earning her M.Ed. with an emphasis in counseling from the University of San Diego. From there, Andrea joined the human resources department of Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich, where she was recognized as an invaluable member of the team until she retired in 2003. Throughout her career, Andrea found much fulfillment in her ability to foster a healthy work environment and bring people together. Her natural kindness and empathy were gifts to those around her, and even in retirement, Andrea continued to share these gifts with her community. Her volunteer work included reading with children in the Turtleback Elementary School library, transporting seniors to doctor appointments, and serving on the board of Elizabeth Hospice.
Andrea traveled extensively, always eager to experience the world. With an eye for life's simple beauties, she enjoyed capturing moments large and small with her camera. Whether taking pictures of delicate flowers, documenting a family gathering, or photographing the ruins of ancient Greece, she found great joy.
Andrea was drawn to the gentle moments of life. Her carefully tended garden delighted her daily, as did the laughter of friends in her bridge club and the passionate discussions held by her book club. She was a life-long learner who could devour a novel in a single sitting, a collector of words and pictures and stories and memories. Over the years she witnessed her family grow, as her sons and stepdaughter married, and nine grandchildren graced her life. Andrea was a beacon of warmth for all who entered her wide and welcoming circle and her bonds with family and friends fortified her will to live. She fought a courageous battle against multiple myeloma, armed with steadfast love both given and received. Everyone who witnessed her bravery will forever be inspired by it.
Andrea is survived by her husband, Dennis; her sons, Scott, Rob and Mark Petrie; stepdaughter, Kris Peyakov; daughters-in-law, Leisa, Debbie and Jen Petrie; son-in-law, Ed Peyakov; brother, Bud Forrest and his wife Linda Tomlin in Williamsburg, Virginia; Bud's daughter, Rosanna Forrest in Nashville, Tennessee; and her grandchildren, Zach, Matthew, Rachel, Kyle, Jane, Charlie, Caroline, Kolleen and Gracie.
Services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 11:00 AM at St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 16275 Pomerado Rd, Poway, California, followed by a reception in the parish hall.
Those wishing to do so are encouraged to donate to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, the San Diego Blood Bank, or the Elizabeth Hospice.

Dennis and Family,
How I will miss our girl...it seems I have known her always but thanks to Trudi's introduction, in the past 10 years, she became part of our bridge group and the first person to say "yes" to joining our new book club. Books and the discussion of them, knit a fabric between the participants and Andrea was such a key part of our unity and self-discovery. A voracious reader and such a bright insightful woman, she always brought the extra mile to our discussions. She was kind...she was a seeker of knowledge and relationships... and I never heard her utter an unkind word about anyone! Her memory will serve as my constant reminder of what I strive to be.
For Dennis the utmost admiration for showing us all what a husband and best friend can be in times of challenge upon challenge. Tom and I are proud to know you.
Love,

My sincere condolences to Dennis and all of Andrea's family and friends. I had the privilege of working with Andrea on board committees and through her board service with us at The Elizabeth Hospice. She brought a sensitive and generous spirit to us and I so appreciated working with her. Her generous gift of her time and wisdom is missed.
May time allow your hearts to heal and only remember the joy and love she gave so freely.

Respectfully,

Andrea was a friend for life and we shared so many wonderful times. I hold you in my heart and find you in the beauty that I see each day. You told me that I would see you in the twinkling of the stars at night. So true, and in the opening of the flower in my yard, and the dance of the butterflies you loved so much. Missing you and filled with gratitude for our friendship.

I feel honored to have known Andrea since age 10 when we sat next to each other in fifth grade. We continued to attend both Jr.high and high School together.
Andrea was the youngest graduate in our class yet one of the brightest. She was a scholar and had both musical and athletic ability. She was a popular cheerleader and a respected leader among her peers.
As an adult, Andrea continued to thrive.
Her love of life and family was always apparent and her beautiful obituary speaks for itself.
I will miss Andrea everyday and am blessed
to have called her friend for the past 60
years. May God bless you, Dennis and family.

HONORING ANDREA

Those of us who have had the privilege to share her being have been blessed. Her story from her childhood in New York, to the last years in California was a continuous search for a higher spirituality.

She (with Dennis) was the promoter of our Spirituality Group. We learned from her research, living experiences, and beautiful soul the joy of discovering, the inspiration of new ideas and thoughts. Many times with her and Dennis we had incredible moments of laughter.

We don't know exactly where her being is now, as we didn't know her being before coming into this world, but as she existed before exists now.
We manifest our love and affection to her through prayers and meditation and, in my case, my gratitude for the moments of joy, compassion and understanding lived together.

What a beautiful soul Andrea is--one of those rare persons we can instantly relate to! Poised, articulate, loving, seeking, caring, interested in others' lives and willing to share her own. It has been such a great pleasure to know both Andrea and Dennis. We only wish our time with them had been greatly expanded. We are thinking of you, Dennis, and wishing you comfort, love and God's peace as you begin the next phase of your journey.

Families are Forever. You will all be together again. Love to all of you. Your Cousin, Judy

Life holds many blessings…Andrea was one of them. Her smile, warmth, caring, and compassionate attitude will never be forgotten. I sat on a committee with Andrea and as the group gathered we would often share stories of travel, share tips on where to go and what to pack…those are great “traveling pants”. (She would know what I am talking about.) Sharing those memories with us shall never be forgotten.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts.
With caring thoughts,

I worked with Dennis and met Andrea through him. From the first meeting I recognized in her a gracious and intelligent lady. Their love of each other shone through everything they did and blessed the life of others. After I retired and moved from San Diego county I could only meet them on rare occassions, but I will cherish the memories of those times. I could wish to have known this lady better as we shared a love of reading and music and I suspect many other things. Cling to your memories, Dennis, and God give you peace.

It's been very difficult accepting the reality of Andrea's passing. She was such a vibrant, engaging person with so many interests. Her love of, and devotion to Dennis and their children and grandchildren were so apparent. Her friendliness and sincere interest in others made her a welcome addition to any social gathering. The many great dinners at our mutual friend, Judith's, bring back wonderful memories of time shared. There was always lots of laughter, interesting discussions, sharing of experiences and great food to be eaten. We will hold these dear memories close and always smile when we think of Andrea. To the dear family of our friend, Andrea Klein, please accept my heartfelt sadness for your loss. I did not know Andrea well but was always so glad when she and Dennis attended a small group which meets in the Lake San Marcos area. We call ourselves simply the "spirituality" group. We are from all different religions or none at all but we like to express our love by being together to share good thoughts about life. Andrea was such a great inspiration to us all as she past through the hard times. She gave us her very best and we loved her dearly. Sally Lind
