Charles G. Gibbs "Jiggs" "Charlie"
Charles Gibbs, 70, Larsen, passed away at his home, Thursday evening, January 23, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born October 18, 1943, in Palm Beach, FL, the son of Charles and Helen (Harlow) Gibbs.
He served in the U.S. Army on the 11th Battalion 116th Assault Helicopter Company in 1965/1966 in Vietnam. He was proud to serve as Crew Chief/Door Gunner where he earned 14 air metals with over 300 combat missions. Charlie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 10893.
Jiggs married Bette Nabbefeld on October 5, 1968, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah. He was employed at American Can Company which became James River Corporation for 31 years, as well as Alcan Packaging prior to retiring in 1995.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying many trips out west. His dogs were an important part of his life, including his little buddy, Peanut. He loved playing sheephead and cribbage with his friends and family. In his spare time, Jiggs liked to read, do crossword puzzles, and camp with the family.
Jiggs is survived by his wife, Bette of 45 years, and his three daughters: Jackie (John) Thompson, Larsen; Jennie (Gene) Smit and their children: Paige and Ian, Neenah; and Jesse (Dan) Holland and their children: Drew and Alex, Madison; his mother: Helen Gibbs; five siblings: Joan Longsine, Janet (Al) Elsworth, Patti (Rick) Harrer, Mary (Jeff) Gross, and Steve Gibbs; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father: Charles A. Gibbs; and his brother: Michael Gibbs.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial St., Neenah, with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. Visitation will be Tuesday at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors will be performed by members of the Neenah Menasha Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army following services at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in Jiggs' name.
Jiggs' family would like to thank the staff at ThedaCare at Home and Hospice; WI Veterans Home at King; the Larsen-Winchester Lions Club and the many doctors and staff that have given him special care during his long illness.
