EULOGY for MOM

When was I thinking about what I would say about my Mom today, I had a very difficult time. I really struggled! The reason that I struggled is that I kept trying to think about happy times, and a funny story that I could tell, but all that I could think about were my Mom's long term, very difficult issues with her physical and emotional health.
It's not that there weren't any good memories. There were! I'll always remember how she and my Dad, Bill were married for fifty- six years and how they loved to go to parties, how they loved to go out dancing and how they lived to dine at the Village Inn. I'll remember how my Mom loved her 6 grandchildren Katie, Allie, Jordan, Eric, Darren and Amanda, and how she always wanted to make sure that they received their birthday cards and Christmas gifts! Just last week while in the nursing home she wanted to make sure that Jeff sent my sister Kathy and my daughter Katie cards for their upcoming birthdays. I'll think about how she raised Buck, Jeff, Kathy and me to be good kids. I'll always remember that she loved her daughter in-laws Nancy and Donna and her son-in-law Art and how she treated them as one of her own.
There are memories that will put a smile on people's faces. When she was younger everybody said that she reminded them of Edith Bunker from “All in the Family.” I'm sure her friends and relatives will think of bowling with Mom in a bowling league or attending parties together. And of course there was the big moment when she hit the Betty Boop slot machine!
But the memory that will stay with me forever is how my Mom had poor health for so long and how it affected her emotional outlook. I'll think about how many Doctor appointments and hospital stays that she had. I'll think about how she never felt like doing much except to stay home. I'll think about the family events that she did not attend because she didn't feel good. I'll think about how hard it was for us to understand this, and how bad & sad & mad we felt that she couldn't be there for a Thanksgiving Dinner or Birthday Party. And I'll think about the night she passed away and how peaceful she looked and how she truly was in a better place!
Mom, your difficulties and your struggles have taught all of us lessons. It taught us to be more understanding and empathetic towards someone with a serious or long term illness. We learned that we should be TRULY THANKFUL for our good health. We learned that we should REALLY APPRECIATE LIFE and all of the things that we enjoy doing. We learned not to feel guilty about playing an extra round of golf or taking a vacation because if you put it off you may lose the OPPORTUNITY. We learned to enjoy being with your family and friends WHILE YOU CAN. Thank-you for these lessons, Mom!
We'll always love you! We know that you're in that big casino in the sky right now with Dad hitting the big one on every spin! We're going to miss you, Mom!
