Bob will be remembered best as the "Fish Tycoon" as he had built a business of selling fresh fish that were caught by Ron Paquin in the Straights near St. Ignace. Bob got to know Ron through is extensive research on the Native American fishing treaties. Bob Jr. and I had the opportunity to work this fish business the the "Fish Tycoon" for one summer. I remember many trips to St. Ignace and back through Traverse City, Honor and down to Grand Rapids selling fish to markets and restaurant along the way. Bob would tell stories and explain the history of the native northern Michigan people.

I'll also remember Bob swapping stories and recalling history of Benzie County with by father, "Fireman Bob", every summer at Platte Lake. Both of these "historians" will be missed this summer, but their legacy will not. We will continue to tell their stories to our children and grandchildren. I'm sure they will continue to swap stories in heaven.
God bless Bob, Bob Jr., Kathy and Ian.

To the Doherty Family,

Although our paths have not crossed recently, memories of you and your father continue to bring a smile to my face and add joy to a day as I reflect on some of our escapades around northern Michigan...the lakes, rivers and occasional wineries! What a time we had and Bob was one of those fathers who seemed to understand youth and let us be as long as we were safe. He was always easy to be around and had such a casual way about himself. It was a pleasure to have known him and we are saddened by his passing. When I introduced my "husband to be, Jim" to Bob I remember feeling it was important that your dad liked him. A funny memory, but I had a lot of respect for Bob and knew Jim would enjoy him as well.

We are still on the north shore of Crystal Lake...at Chimney Corners. I still run down Long Lake Road and visit the old blue cottage...thinking of your family. Then the cottage on the south shore of Crystal. How your dad must have felt when they opened up the road from Beulah. He had a knack at finding great "hideaways".

I too lost my father on January 23rd of this year...just a few weeks before Bob passed. It will take time to understand it all, but hope that good memories prevail.

May the spirit, wisdom and love of your father live on in you all.

God Bless,

Mary and Jim Rogers (Tristan & Jaylon)

My deep and sincere sympathy to all the family; Bob, Kathy, Ian and all on the death of your father and our dear friend, Bob Doherty. It was always a special joy to have him visit us at Platte Lake. He and my Bob enjoyed long talks about the area, its history, the Indians, nature, beauty, etc. He was an extraordinary man, eager to preserve it all. We were amazed at his desire to continue teaching and always looked forward to his return to Honor each summer. He will be surely missed. God speed! No doubt he and my Bob are already swapping stories!. Sincerely Esther VanHammen and family
