Jim was a friend for decades. I worked with him and the late Professor Charles Beroes in teaching a short course in advance of several International Conferences on Coal Gasification, Liquefaction, and Conversion to Electricity.
His interest and activity in two professional societies, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) was considerable, and I spent many hours with him both in national and local meetings devoted to these organizations.
Jim was always an optimist, and my mental image of him is one who had almost unlimited zeal for his work.
I had a number of discussions with him concerning his religious beliefs and thoroughly enjoyed these moments.
He was a valuable coleague, and I pray that his strong religious beliefs will bring some comfort to his family.
Sincerely, Alan J. Brainard, Associate Professor Emeritus, School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh

Jim Cobb was truly an asset to the Engineering profession. His service to the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers at local and state levels was outstanding. He was a fine fellow and will be missed. Jon W. Drosendahl, P.E.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Cobb's family. I had the pleasure of working for him during his Energy Resources days and also in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. He was a very kind man and a pleasure to work for and with. He will be greatly missed.
