Jason,
It's been 9 years now since you left us all for a better place. During that time I know you have reunited with some other people close to your heart in that better place. Just know that many here still think of you often and really miss you and your infectious smile. You truly will never be forgotten. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice.

Jason,
Another year of missing you. Still wearing the bracelet on my wrist with your name on it. Pray for us down here because we sure need all the help we can get. I'll never know why God took you away, but I am so glad that you are with Him and able to watch over the rest of us. I know that you have kept your smile. That is what I remember the most: your wonderful smile. Thank you for having been in my life.

Jason,
I think of you often. You were a blessing to me and I carry you with me each day. The two little nuts that liked to play on the tanks out front of the RFCT HQs in Friedberg are not so little now. Jonas is freshman at Norwich in the Corps of Cadets. Stefan is a high school freshman and in his second year on the varsity wrestling team. He won his first tournament of the year last Saturday. Susi is still reforming me. I am ever grateful she still thinks I am worth the effort.
I will see you on the high ground.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the West Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. I just recently learned it was Jason that had passed. I new him from High School and Slippery Rock. Jason always had a smile on his face and was the sweetest guy around. He lost his life fighting for what he believed and loved. Thank you Jason for sacrificing your life for our freedom. My heart aches for your family and wife. May God be with you all. You will always be in my prayers.

Jason,
Cannot believe that it has been 6 years since I lost you. Not a day goes by that you are not in my heart and on my mind. I sometimes look at the pictures you had sent me from Iraq and the lovely letters, and I feel you close to me again. I hope that I was a good "other mom" for you. Say a good word for me to God...I know that he listens to you.

Jason was a very special man. I miss him to this day. He reported into Friedberg when I was commanding the Rear Detachment during the RFCT's first deployment, 2003-2004. He served as one of our Casualty Assistance Officers (CAO) and wrote up his lessons learned that we used to help every other CAO. He was exceptional as a 2nd Lieutenant. I hated to deploy him forward but it was where he was meant to be and he was exceptional there also. He came back and worked with me in the Brigade S1 section until I departed in November 2004. He deployed as the Brigade S1-Forward and we spoke often via email as I was in Baghdad with 1 BCT 10 MTN and he was with the RFCT in Tal Afar/Ramadi. It broke my heart when I got the news. I dearly loved him; he helped keep me sane and I pray to God I gave him a bit in return. I think of him every day.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

West Family and Julie,
I was a new 2LT on rear detachment when I was told we had an LT coming back from Iraq whose apartment was near mine, and that I'd be driving him to work until he could get his car out of storage. The first time I talked to him on the phone, Jason ended the conversation with something like, "I'll see you when you pick me up n'at" and I knew I had a fellow Pittsburgher to relate to. His apartment was full of nostalgia that only locals could appreciate, from his I.C. Lite bar sign to his piece of 3 Rivers turf. I'll never forget the night he and Julie had me over to eat wings and watch the Steelers in the playoffs. It was like being home again. I often felt I was following in Jason's path, having been a Tanker tasked to an Infantry BN during the deployment, then brought to BDE staff to work in the S1 shop. The news that we'd lost him was a shock to everyone he'd worked with. He was a good officer, a good man, and won't be forgotten.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To all of Captain West's friends and family,
I am proud to say that i knew jason, even if only for a short time while at Slippery Rock when we both went with the Ski & Snowboard Club to Vermont. I was devastated at the news of his death and my heart goes out to his wife and family. He was a great man, easy to get along with, ready for any challenge and just someone everyone wanted to have as a friend. I feel terrible for not having learned of his sacrifice earlier and i know that no amount of sympathy or empathy will ever bring him back, but i will never forget him.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

The news of Jason's passing was really hard to take. He and I were Apache crewchiefs on Ft. Bragg back in 97-98 and had a large tight-nit group of friends. I got out in October of 1998. He was one of the few I kept in touch with. He is greatly missed and will always be. Until now I've not experienced sadness towards losing someone in Iraq, but I also can't imagine the pain his family is going through. To Jason's family: My thoughts and prayers will always be with you. He was one of the best friends I ever had.

To the family of Capt. Jason West,
While I did not know Jason, I know that he gave the ultimate sacrifice. His life. For that, I am truly grateful. It means freedom for so many here in America. And while I do not know what it is like to lose a son, a brother or a husband, I do know what it is like to have a son in harm's way. My son is defending America's freedom like Jason did. My deepest sympathy to all of you. His death is not in vain. God bless you and give you His peace that passes all understanding. Its been over a month now and each day I think of Jason and our time together back at Slippery Rock University. I remember how impressed I was of Jason. For those who knew Jason, you know what I mean. Over time we became good friends, and he became a mentor as well. His thirst for knowledge was incredible. He always was the first to share, whether it was a thought, a beer, or a joke. He could always make me laugh, he made everyone laugh. I always lamented the fact that he graduated before me, I wish that I could have served with him. I'm sure that he was a compassionate leader. Jason lived life to the fullest, in every aspect, he put his heart into whatever he touched. I am so grateful for the time that we spent, but I just wish there was more. Thank you for everything Jason. We have been humbled. May God rest your soul, and grant your family peace in there lives.

Dear Dee, Doug and Juli
Although it's been years since I've seen Jason, I know you are very proud...he was a good man.
I will always remember him with his glasses, tufts of hair and crooked grin, on the football field or hanging out. From all I've read he is one of those people who have touched many lives...and enriched them - the "richest man in town" one who has friends.
I just heard about this yesterday--my heart aches for your loss, please know that you are all in my prayers.

My deepest sympathies to each and every one of you. I am not exactly sure what to say, there are no right words for something like this, but I'd just like to let you know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dee and Doug,
I can not express my shock and sorrow to hear of your son passing. My heart goes out to you and I will certainly keep you in my prayers through this unbelievable hard time. I am sorry this is so late, Robin C let me know, I somehow must have missed the announcement in the paper. I remember how proud you were of him, still in college back when we worked together.

Juli and family,
My husband worked with Jason on the BDE staff here in Germany and deployed with him to Iraq. Andy always spoke so highly of Jason. I can't even seem to picture him without a smile on his face...it was so contagious. My heart aches for you, Juli. You will both hold a special place in our hearts forever and Jason will never be forgotten.
May God comfort you and bring you peace. I know in my heart that there is another angel watching over his Brothers In Arms now.

Dear Dee, Doug, Juli and everyone who knew and loved Jason:
I keep trying to find the magic words that would make this loss easier to bear, but there are no such words. I have seen magic though. People from all over the world were compelled to come be together to share their loss and love of Jason. If they couldn’t make it in person, they came together on these pages. I saw Jason alive as people reached out to comfort each other, share their stories, and celebrate Jason. People that never would have met otherwise spent hours and days together because of that common bond. That’s so Jason. He was the one that was friends with everyone. He brought us all together. His light has touched us all and has multiplied. Keep in touch with his wife and family, and each other. Jason gave them and each of you this gift of himself. Whenever any of you come together, he will be there!

I am a high school classmate of Jason, and will always remember his contagious smile and uncompromised friendliness towards others.
Although I had not seen Jason in years, it is obvious from these tributes that he continued these venerable traits while also becoming an accomplished and selfless soldier.
While cloaked in sorrow, it is with the utmost respect and admiration that I thank you for your bravery and dedication to our country.
My thoughts and prayers are with your wife, family, friends, and those who served with you during this difficult time.

Dee and Dougie,
I am so sorry for your loss. I remember babysitting Jason and Dougie and the great times we had on Afton Avenue. I will always keep you and your families in my prayers. Jason's loyalty to this wonderful county can never be fully expressed through words. I know he loved his job and died doing what he loved. I know God will keep him in his arms forever. God Bless all of you!

Ms. West,
Thank you for raising such a fine young man. Give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for the marvelous job you have done. In these difficult times, I want you to know Jason was proud of his mother.
Jason and I were great friends and I am deeply saddened that he will no longer be with us. The strength of his personality was contagious and will never be forgotten. Jason was an amazing human being with irreplaceable characteristics.
As I stated in my eulogy, friends and family were always a top priority for Jason. It is necessary for us to remain strong and committed to each other. The social gatherings Jason enjoyed must be continued by all of us. I look forward to creating new memories with you and revisiting the lifetime of memories Jason has blessed us with.

The entire West family has my deepest sympathy. I remember playing soccer with Jason at the Boys & Girls club in Carnegie and then years later going to high school together. He was always a great guy. I remember talking to him about what we would do after high school and he said he planned on joining the Army and I could tell just by the way he talked, he was going to make a great soldier.
Our country was very blessed to have him serve. May God keep Jason and his family in his loving arms.

Juli,
I cannot begin to describe how badly I feel for you. Losing a husband, companion and soul mate is devastating. Many admired your relationship with Jason. He has left a place in your heart that will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill.
The stories and experiences that we have shared over the years will not be forgotten. Trish and I are blessed to have you in our lives and saddened that Jason has moved on. Jason will always be remembered as a great friend.
Although Jason will be missed, he has provided us with an opportunity to develop a strong relationship with you and your always entertaining family. We look forward to continuing our friendship with all of you. We will never leave your side Juli!

I will never forget the day that I met Jason - he was a young Lt, who wandered in to my office in 2004 looking for some help, as we sat together going through his papers & making conversation, we talked about the extraordinarily hot summer we were having in Germany. I mentioned in passing that the AC in my car had gone out & needed to be recharged. About a week and a half later - this young man comes running into my office with bags from AAFES - he had happened to see AC recharger while he was in Giessen & had remembered that mine was out so he picked some up for me... remember that I had only met him ONCE before. This is the kind of man that Jason was. I had the privelege of working with him again as part of the Brigade staff and will never forget his warmth and kindness.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
