JOYCE FOWLER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 11 to Aug. 12, 2018.

FOWLER JOYCE ANN (ROBINETTE)

Born April 29, 1927, in Bluefield, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Randolph Robinette and Aileen Esther (Sheppard) Robinette. She was an only child. She graduated from Bluefield High School. The acclaimed scientist, John Nash, was her prom date! She attended Bluefield College, the fourth generation of college educated women in her family. In 1945, she married Earl Richard Fowler. The moved from Bluefield to Roanoke, Virginia, and then to Oakmont, PA. They eventually settled in Plum Borough. They were happily married until Mr. Fowler's death in 1998. They had three children. Mrs. Fowler worked as an independent market researcher for organizations such as Proctor and Gamble, Temple University, and the University of Chicago. She also worked as a census taker for the US Bureau of Census. Mrs. Fowler always said that there are two types of people in this world - givers and takers. Her life personified the former. She lived a life of volunteerism and giving, affecting so many of the people in her communities. For many years, she worked at the polls on election day. She worked diligently in the Plum Schools to better the lives of both teachers and students. She served as district PTA president and was one of the founding parents of the Plum High Band Boosters. She served as chaperone for many trips and school outings. She was a frequent scout leader and could also be found serving refreshments at sporting concession stands. She helped to establish scholarships for students in need to attend college. Mrs. Fowler had been an active member of Unity United Presbyterian Church, where she helped to establish a junior church program. She was an active member of Plum Creek Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron and District Deputy. She delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler split their time between their homes in Plum and Lake Worth, Florida, where she taught adult literacy classes. She had a remarkable positive effect on so very many people. Her door was always open to everyone no matter the color of their skin, religious belief, gender preference, or lot in life. She welcomed into her home many exchange students and foreign guests from a variety of countries. Groups of youngsters would frequently be found at her home, which was also the site of frequent cast parties, band parties, after sports event parties, and birthday bashes. She even welcomed the neighborhood dogs, keeping treats handy for their visits. Mrs. Fowler is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Lynn (Fowler) Harris; son-in-law, Mark Harris; daughter-in-law, Joyce (Bumbera) Fowler; grandchildren, Randi Lee (Fowler) Bick, Jennifer Lynn (Fowler) Kurtz, Michael Roy Fowler, Grant Richard Harris, and Augusta Aileen Harris; great-grandchildren, Cassandra Lynn Fowler, Ashley Jordan Black, Tyler Grason Kurtz, and Riley Saunders Kurtz. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Earl Richard Fowler (1925-1998); and beloved sons, Roy Lee Fowler (1953-1970), and Randolph Saunders Fowler (1951-2017). Friends received Sunday, 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. at SOXMAN FUNERAL HOMES, LTD. / ROTH CHAPEL, 7450 Saltsburg Road (at Universal Road), Penn Hills. A Funeral Service will be held at Monday, 11 a.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek. Interment in Plum Creek Cemetery.
