Professor Walter L. Pilant passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on December 15, 2017. Born in Los Angeles, California, he was a graduate of Cal-Tech, UCLA, served in the Army and moved to Pittsburgh in 1963 where he taught for over 30 years at the University of Pittsburgh. He will be greatly missed by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, here and abroad, who love him very much. Walter was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and served in many ways. He enjoyed scouting, coaching, and taking his family on adventures. He will be remembered as mentor, author, and a speaker who was passionate about his work in the field. It was always insightful to listen to Walter talk - whether in the classroom or on the trail at South Mountain. I always appreciated Walter allowing me to work along side him an with him. - Frank Benacquista

In so many ways this is a sad time because it involves a loss, and those feelings cannot be denied. But, as I read Walter's obituary published here, i can not but help to smile. Walter surely lived a full, dynamic, and blessed life; much to his own doing. He reached out to the next challenge before him and tamed it for his pleasure and usefulness. Even as I write this note I smile and think how fortunate we all are for knowing Walter in this earthly time and space.

My deepest sympathies to the Pilant family. I will remember him as that friendly face on the fourth floor of SRCC who always welcomed me when I stopped by for a visit.
