HOY
MARIE OSBORNE
August 3, 1915 - September 9, 2013. Age 98, of Pittsburgh, died Monday morning at Schenley Gardens in Oakland. She is survived by two sons, Robert B. Hoy, Jr. (Jerri Hoy), of Asheville, North Carolina, and John O. Hoy (Karen Drucker), of San Rafael, California, and two daughters, Mary Ellen Hoy (Jim Keller), of Fox Chapel, and Patricia A. Horoschak, of Denver, Colorado. She had four grandchildren, Susannah Keller (Adam Lauring), Samantha Horoschak (Rich Stevenson), Emily Keller and Marina Gross-Hoy. She also had four great-grandchildren, Annie Stevenson, Henry Stevenson, Noah Lauring and Celia Lauring. Marie's husband of nearly sixty years, Robert B. Hoy, died in March 2003. Marie was born in Ogdensburg, New Jersey, graduated from high school at age 15, and from Montclair State Teachers College (now Montclair State University) at age 19, and became a successful elementary school teacher in her home town. Marie was an avid reader, and a strong supporter of public education and libraries. She volunteered as a Friend of the Library in Golden, Colorado, for many years. Her husband was a geologist, and his work took his family to homes in Pennsylvania, California, New Jersey, and, for the last thirty years of their life together, Golden and Lakewood, Colorado. In December 2005, Marie moved to Schenley Gardens, where she quickly established a community of friends among residents and staff alike. Throughout her life, Marie took a special interest in the lives and stories of friends, acquaintances and even strangers, exhibiting an uncanny knack for remembering names and events from the distant and recent past. She also enjoyed getting to know her new city of Pittsburgh and its cultural highlights, especially the Carnegie Museums and Phipps Conservatory. Marie's comfort and well-being for the last several years were made possible by the care of the staff of Schenley Gardens and a number of marvelous personal aides, including, most recently, Ruthie DeBruce, Estelle Joiner, Iris Swift, and Sable Smith. A funeral service will be held at 11 :00 a.m. on September 14, at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland, and a remembrance gathering will be held later that day, at 2:30 p.m., in the fourth floor dining room at Schenley Gardens. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in her memory to the St. Paul Cathedral Social Ministry, St. Paul Cathedral, 108 North Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213-2608. Professional services trusted to the THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, Blawnox.

Dear MaryEllen and Jim,
I extend my sympathies to all of the family members she has left behind. What a good and thoughtful life she enjoyed.
The two of you made her years in Pittsburgh a happy time of discovery and new friendships. I have no doubt that she deeply appreciated the numerous ways in which you both made her final years full of good times and love.
With admiration and love to you both,
