YVONNE ZANOS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 8 to Feb. 9, 2010.

ZANOS YVONNE MARQUER
Of Upper St. Clair, died peacefully on Friday, January 8th, with family at her bedside. Yvonne courageously battled ovarian cancer for two years, eventually succumbing to the disease two days after her 60th birthday. Originally from Bethel Park, Yvonne is the daughter of Edith Shadler and the late Gus Marquer; sister to Nancy Mele (Frank) and Carol Rumberger (Chaz). She is survived by Jim, loving husband for 38 years; daughters Adona Kane (Will) and Nicole Conaway (Bill). The greatest joys of her life were grandchildren Lindsey, Lily, Nora, Tess and Beau. Yvonne was well known throughout Pittsburgh, having worked for 30 years as an award winning on-air personality for both KDKA and WTAE-TV. Most recently she worked as Consumer News Editor for KDKA, serving as an advocate for the people of Western Pennsylvania. For years, she spearheaded the KDKA Turkey Fund, raising money to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to needy families. Yvonne was passionate about her work, and was overwhelmed by the love and support she received from her friends, former colleagues and KDKA family. In the two years since her diagnosis, Yvonne served as emcee for the Ovarian Cancer Walk at North Park. Outside of work, Yvonne enjoyed gardening and yoga, and her love for animals was well known. Her greatest love was for her five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS. Friends welcome at 2828 Washington Rd. McMurray, PA 15317, (724-941-3211), on Sunday 2-4 and 6-9 and Monday 5-9. A Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Rd. Bethel Park, PA 15102. Donations may be made to the KDKA Turkey Fund c/o Greater Pittsburgh Community Foodbank, 1 North Linden St. Duquesne, PA 15110. Please add or view tributes at www.beinhauer.com

May,the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation give you all the needed endurance as days and weeks go on.
God is near to those that are broken at heart;
And those who are crushed in spirit he saves
He is healing the brokenhearted ones,
And is binding up their painful spots.

My condolences to the family of Yvonne Zanos.
I moved to Pittsburgh from New Jersey in 1988 and spent the best 15yrs of my life there. I didn't know Yvonne, but enjoyed her news program with her bubbley personality and professional demeanor. I think that's why everyone loved her. She was a"down to earth" person and treated everyone as though you were family. I'm sure you have many memories to help in this difficult time. May Yvonne rest in peace.

Several weeks have passed since this world lost a lovely, compassionate and caring woman - Yvonne Zanos. She was truly an inspiration to all she came in contact with - her spirit touched so many people, and will continue to in the many wonderful memories she left with her family, friends and her television friends and "family". We, and so many others will miss Yvonne, and will think of her often for so many reasons. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and hope that the special memories they have of her and the thoughts and caring of so many for Yvonne will help them at this time and in the future.

I will always remember Yvonne on KDKA,
I remember her coming out and talking about the signs of Ovarian Cancer and to have the screening, I had been having some of the same symtoms so because of her I went to the doctor and he told me the CT showed a large mass in my abdominal area and he thought it could be the disease. I was one of the lucky ones operated on
in November 2008 at Magee Womens Hospital. The mass was negative for cancer but if not been checked could lead to cancer. Thanks to her I went to be checked and she gave me the courage to do so, I was so scared. I will forget her and I wished I could have thanked her. God bless your family she was great and she will always be a part of your heart. (I was born and raised in Pittsburgh)

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Several years ago I was trying to recover money from a mature life insurance policy that I had lost. I wrote to Yvonne at the Post-Gazette for her help. She replied and then came to my home to do a consumer advocate video for KDKA. The problem was solved with her much appreciated help. Since that time we became e-mail buddies and ahared many laughs together. Last summer when Susan Boyle became famous, I sent Yvonne a YouTube of Susan's performance which she said she loved. I later sent her a YouTube of the performance of the lady who sang "I Dreamed A Dream" from the original production "Les Miserable" for comparison. Yvonne wrote back "I'll take the little fat lady" She was so funny and enjoyed life so much. I'll miss her.

To Yvonne's family and KDKA,
My thoughts and prayers are with you in the loss of Yvonne. I enjoyed watching her on TV. One time, about 2 years ago, I ran into her on an elevator on Stanwix Street. I immediately recognized her; she smiled and said something funny about the elevator(I forget what it was). I smiled and laughed. I didn't say anything to her cause I didn't know what to say; it all happened so quickly. Now I wish I had said something. Connie Rotondo

A number of years ago I wrote to Yvonne's consumer column in the Post-Gazette, complaining of unfair pricing regarding a product I had purchased at a local grocery store. Within a very short timeframe she contacted the store, who in turn contacted me, and immediately rectified the situation. The funny thing was, it really was quite an insignificant pricing error, but the way I was treated at the store at the time angered me. Yvonne, however, treated the matter seriously, and I enjoyed the few emails we swapped during that time. She was a funny and gracious lady and I felt as if I was talking with a friend.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of her death, and to her family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences.

She was such a beautiful person in looks but also in her heart. We e-mailed each other after she put my story in her blog. I am an Ovarian cancer survivor of 6 years. We were the same stage when diagnosed. When I needed a new gyne/onc Yvonne sent me to the group she went to. It broke my heart when I heard the news. Yvonne you will always be in my prayers. I know you are in heaven looking down at your family that you loved so much. To her family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. If you see a rainbow Yvonne will be the one at the top waving.

I never has the pleasure of meeting Yvonne, except through the magic of television. Even when I was a little girl I remember her doing the evening magazine show. I always had the feeling that she was as genuine in real life as she appeared to be on tv. As I grew and learned more about her life and her community involvement, I am even more sure of it. Yvonne has touched more lives than anyone will ever know. I know I am not alone when I say I will miss her. My condolences to her family and friends. Ms. Zanos came to my home in Penn Hills back in 1996, to do a consumer report for me--I had been scammed by an insurance agent. Because of that story, that agent was brought to justice and 8 other people and myself all eventually received restitution...We have since moved back to our hometown area in NH, but I have never forgotten her. I am saddened to hear of her battle with cancer and her death. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to her family and colleagues. Our deepest sympathy to the Zanos family for your loss. I knew Yvonne only on a business level. I was director of public safety at South Hills Village Mall. Whenever Yvonne was in the mall, either for business or for her own personal errands, I was directed to watch her and report back to the mall manager as to what she was doing. Through my interactions with Yvonne over the course of the years, we developed a friendly repore that we both understood. (the phrase "I'm watching you" started with me and Yvonne) I will miss her, she was a great lady. God bless you all.

It has been 28 years since I worked with Yvonne at Evening Magazine at KDKA. It seems like yesterday since we worked together because of what a joy it was to work with her. In all of my 29 years in the business as a photographer, she was the nicest, most caring on air personality I have ever worked with. I will never forget her laugh. Dear Zanos Family:

I had the pleasure of working on a consumer segment with Yvonne when she was at WTAE -- and it was just that, a pleasure. She walked me through what I had to do and was every bit the professional. My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Zanos family. Although, the years and geographic distance took us apart, there is a special place in my heart for the teenage girl I knew and loved and I wept at her passing way too soon. We shared many hopes and dreams together as high school friends. She was always happy for someone else's successes and always compassionate when there was failure. I remember her wonderful laugh and her shining eyes and her beauty both inside and out. I always felt so proud to have been her friend when I returned to Pittsburgh throughout the years and would see her reporting. I knew that she followed her dream and had lived it. The world will be a little less bright without this shining star.

We had the great honor to meet Yvonne and Jim at a cocktail party several years ago and had a wonderful time talking with them. They are true Pittsburghers - you know - those folks who you converse with and feel as if they were lifelong friends.
Last spring, we met Yvonne again in town and I was teasing her about how she never ages. She laughed off my comment, but what I said was true. For many of us the memory of this wonderful, delightful person who brought smiles to so many is ageless.
To her family, our sincerest condolences and sympathy. May the patron Saint of consumers rest in peace with the Good Lord.

While getting ready for work on Monday, January 11, 2010,that Yvonne Zanos had passed. I always enjoyed her consumer reports about products and services.

One time a company took money out of my checking account without my permisson and because I heard Yvonne inform the public about that same company, I was able to gather information, take it to my financial institution and they withdrew charges that we not my fault and replenished funds that we taken.
I always remember Yvonne's pleasant smile and cheerful voice. We are the same age, born the same year and only 13 days difference in birthdays. I will pray for her family, friends and tv audience. Good bye Yvonne, you will truly be missed!

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Yvonne on various automotive stories for more than 12 years. She was warm, creative and free-spirited, treating each story like an adventure. She had a wonderful connection with her viewers that came across every evening at 5:00; it was as though she was sharing tips with dear friends and family. And it was always evident that her love for Pittsburgh was deep and unwavering. My sincere condolences to her friends, family, co-workers, and viewers. She lived life to the fullest, and I will never forget that delightful laugh.

Nikki & Bill,

We were very saddened to hear the news about your Mom (Yvonne). I remember meeting your Mom when you lived across the street from us. She was such a happy, caring and fun person with a smile that could light up a room. She was a very strong and corageous woman to battle such a terrible illness.

May God Bless you and watch over you and your family during this difficult time. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I will never forget the time she walked up to a plumbing counter in Rollier's and asked me where dye for mortar was in the store. When I took her to the dye she said "This is just what I'm looking for. After all it is my first dye job - Ya right don't I wish."
I became an instant fan, anyone that can poke fun at themselves like that to a complete stranger is quite an individual. My condolences to her family.

I was so saddened to learn that Yvonne had passed away. I really liked her, and her style. Over the years she on occasion had spent time with her camera crew both at my office and in recent years here at my residence. I am sure going to miss her.

My heartfelt condolences.

She was one in a million. Whether in the public eye or in her personal life she was one of the nicest most considerate persons God ever put on this green earth. Sometimes God stops and creates one that even he is proud to have put in our midst.

"Don't weep at my grave,

For I am not there,

I've a date with a butterfly

To dance in the air.

I'll be singing in the sunshine,

Wild and free,

Playing tag with the wind,

While I'm waiting for thee."

God Bless you Yvonne- our paths will cross again someday
