Allen Dwain Place Sr., 82, of Gatesville, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, November 10, at the First Baptist Church in Gatesville, with Dr. Levi Price officiating. Visitation will be after the funeral service, and then burial will follow at Crawford Cemetery in Crawford.
Dwain was born on March 14, 1931 in Crawford, Texas, to the late Frank and Lucille Bunyard Place. He attended school in Crawford, graduating from Crawford High School in 1948. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1954, serving in Korea. Dwain married Rosy McCoy on December 27, 1952. After serving in the military, he attended Baylor University, graduating in 1957. He worked 10 years, as an accountant, with PanAmerican Oil Corp, and he also worked 30 years with the Texas Youth Commission in Gatesville and Corsicana.
Dwain joined the Lion's Club in 1965, achieving Lion of the Year in 1998, and receiving his 45 year chevron in 2010. He and Rosy were Citizens of the Year in Gatesville in 2006. He loved his community and contributed to it in numerous ways including: Sheriff's Posse member, Coryell Memorial Hospital volunteer, as well as, being a pioneer for the Food for Families in Gatesville and was still serving on the board for the yearly event. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gatesville, joining in 1965 and serving as a deacon in 1972.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers.
Dwain is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosy Place; son, Allen D. Place, Jr. and wife, Tonya; sisters, Barbara Place McCann and husband, Howard and Darlene Place McEnturff and husband, Jimmie; brother, Bob Place and wife, Carole; grandchildren, Ashley Place Louder and husband, Bradley, Amber Place, Shea Place, McKamie Place, and Nicholas Hukel and wife, Sarah; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Colten Hukel; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 912 E. Main, Gatesville, TX 76528.
