SANGERVILLE - Lawrence C. "Jake" Jordan died Jan. 22, 2013, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born June 20, 1926, in Guilford, son of Allen H. and Lillian Goode Jordan.

He played baseball and basketball at Guilford High School, and was fortunate to play for coach Phil Clark. Growing up he delivered the Bangor Daily News, summers he played pick up baseball, and was a Boy Scout. In 1943 he quit school and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended boot camp at Newport, R.I., Company 1052, 10th Battalion. After boot camp he was sent to Norfolk, Va., where he boarded a Liberty ship. He spent two years at a U.S. Naval base in North Africa. He returned home in 1945. He later was assigned to the USS General Harry Taylor APA No. 145 and sailed to LaHarve, France, to pick up troops returning home. He returned to the Fargo Building and received his honorable discharge. Jake was a volunteer plane watcher for the Civil Defense in the early days of World War ll. After the war Jake played "Taps" at military funerals for the Legion post. Jake enjoyed ballroom dancing and he spent many nights at the Crystal Ballroom, Goodwins and the Blue Moon. He played baseball for the Sangerville ball team, coached a little league youth basketball and baseball programs in Sangerville. Jake was a member of Sangerville Fire Department, board of trustees of Guilford and Sangerville Water districts for 21 years, served on Sangerville's 150th celebration and moderator of Sangerville town meetings for 10 years. He was a member and past president of Sangerville Development Corps. Jake enjoyed sports, especially baseball, golf and hockey. In 2004 he saw his Boston Red Sox win the World Series. He was a fan of the Boston Bruins, New England Patriots and New York Giants football team. Jake was a member and past master of Abner Wade Masonic Lodge No. 207, Sangerville, for more than 50 years. He served as treasurer for 16 years and as chairman of the blood bank. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Bangor. He also was a member of the Maine Consistory of Portland, Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor, 100 Million Dollar Club of the Shrine, Past Master's Unit of the Shrine - president for two years, Tri-County Shrine Club, District Deputy Grand Master for the Fifth District of the Grand Lodge of Maine and was District Ritual Instructor. He later became a Certified Masonic Ritual Instructor. He also was a member of Piscataquis Royal Arch Chapter No. 21, Dover-Foxcroft. He accompanied fifth graders from the Guilford school to the Shrine Circus for 22 years, until his health prevented him from continuing. Jake was a member and past commander of Scott Flanders Post No. 165 of the American Legion of Sangerville and a 35-year member of Piscataquis Country Club. He enjoyed golf outings with family and friends. In 1988 he went to the U.S. Open in Brookline, Mass. On March 9, 1948, he married Arlene Knowlton of Sangerville where they raised five children. Jake worked for 42 years at Guilford of Maine. After 25 years as maintenance supervisor he retired in 1991. After retiring he spent five years working in the maintenance department at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. His greatest enjoyment was his family and family gatherings. These were special times for him. Jake received his high school diploma in 2003. He marched along side his grandson, Andy Jordan, at Piscataquis Community High School and it was a special time for him. Thank you Andy for sharing this event with your grandfather.

Jake is survived by his wife, Arlene Knowlton of Sangerville; daughters, Candace Jordan, and Toni Pinkham and husband, William; son, Gregory Jordan and wife, Beverly; son, Kelly Jordan and wife, Nancy; son, Brad Jordan and partner, Sheryl Love; granddaughters, Christine Jordan of Texas, Jennifer Jordan of Pennsylvania, Kimberly Boone and husband, Bert, of Guilford and Brittawny Jordan of Guilford; grandsons, Chad Kimball of Pennsylvania, Andrew Jordan and wife, Nico, of Massachusetts and Matthew Pinkham of Sangerville; great-grandchildren, Christian Kimball and Katelyn and Krista Kimball; cousins, Delores Williams, Richard Jordan and Elaine Boyd; nephews, Jeffrey Jordan and Gary Jordan; and niece, Valerie Goodreau. He was predeceased by his mother, Lillian, who he loved and admired greatly; his father, Allen; grandparents, Lester and Nellie Bishop Jordan of East Millinocket and William and Marjorie Dodge Goode of Guilford; brother, Harold Jordan and his wife, Madeline; sister, Constance Jordan; and cousins, Iva Bickford and Ronald Goode.

There will be a time of remembrance and fellowship for family and friends 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Mount Kineo Masonic Lodge, Guilford. Donations in his memory may be made to Abner Wade Lodge No. 207 of Sangerville, care of William Pinkham, 58 E.
