Ronald Hood Obituary

Ronald Edward Hood, Sr
Lynchburg, VA
Ronald Edward Hood, Sr., 84 of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 22, 2013. He was the husband of the late Barbara Hood.
Born Saturday, June 2, 1928 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Hood and the late Catherine Barrow Hood. He spent most of his youth in the coal regions of southern West Virginia, settling in Mt. Hope as a teen. From there, he attended Concord College where he played in a popular local jazz band and met future bride Barbara Lilly, from Bluefield. With tensions in Korea on the rise, he joined the United States Marine Corps and he and Barbara were married shortly thereafter.
Ron was well known in coal related circles and spent the majority of his career in sales of underground power equipment for the Ohio Brass Company. He retired in the early 1990's when he and Barbara, a retired teacher, moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. to enjoy both the coastal weather and the golf.
He was a good son, loving husband, patient father, talented craftsman, gifted pilot, and some would admit, from time to time a pretty fair golfer. As a younger man, rebuilding airplanes as a hobby, he treasured his time "on the hill," flying out of the Mercer County Airport. Later, he discovered golf and the camaraderie of dear friends on the links; friends who continued to sustain him through his lengthy illness.
Surviving are son, Ronald E. Hood, Jr. and his wife Jane of Lynchburg, grandson Christopher W. Hood now in Winston Salem, NC and granddaughter Rachel A. Hood of Norfolk, VA.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00am at Peakland United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 2, 2013, with a reception to follow. Interment will be in St. Stephens Episcopal Church Columbarium, North Myrtle Beach, SC.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Peakland United Methodist Church4434 Boonsboro Road Lynchburg, VA 24503.
