Darrell Dale Buttars, 76, of Idaho Falls, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 15, 1937, in Idaho Falls, the son of James LeRoy Buttars and Myrtle Velma Carter. He graduated from Bonneville High School.
On Feb. 7, 1958, he married Bonnie Kummer, and together they had two daughters. They parted but remained good friends throughout their lives.
On Sept. 3, 1976, he married Melba Norwood Harris in Island Park and added six more children to the family.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was also a past member of the Elks Lodge.
Dale farmed with his father in his younger years. He was elected as the first sheriff of Ammon. He left law enforcement to work with Loveland Construction, and the construction industry took him throughout the West on various projects. In the early 1980s, Dale opened Quality Custom Cabinet. He took great pride in his work and was privileged to install beautiful cabinets in many homes in southeast Idaho.
He enjoyed woodworking and made many things for family and friends. He liked to snowmobile and four-wheel at his cabin in Island Park.
He is survived by his wife, Melba of Iona; daughters, Penny (Mike) Marriott of Riverside and Melanie Forbes of Meridian; stepchildren, Frank Samargis of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Debbie (Ken) Shepherd of Tucson, Ariz., Julie (Alvin) Turner of Tucson, Ariz., Lori (Joey) Arce-Torres of Lincoln City, Ore., and Nancy Harris of Salt Lake City; brothers, Harold Buttars of Shelley and Dick Buttars of Emmett, Idaho; sisters, Jean Black of California and Beverly Black of Shelley; 22 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerold and Lavon Buttars; sisters, Donnetta Ross and Helen Gray; and a stepson, Rhett Harris.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday for one hour prior to services, both at the funeral home. Interment will be in Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.

Melba and family, I am sorry to hear about Dale. I do appreciate my years of friendship with him. Starting at Idaho Lumber where he worked as a cabinet maker. It seems that things went on from there.

Dear Melba and Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about Dale's death. We are all getting to the age that we just don't know who will be next. I'm sad that he didn't make it to our last reunion but happy that we were able to visit a few times in the last few years. My best to all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Dear Family Sorry to hear about Dale, we moved from Idaho Falls in 2003 to Nevada so we lost contact with him. I have known the Buttars family since the 50's, we are sending our thoughts and prayers to all.

Melba, my first memories of moving to Idaho was meeting Dale almost the second day there. That smiling face still shows in my mind and he will always be remembered that way. My heartfelt thanks for being a part of your lives for this long isn't enough to convey my sorrow for the loss. All my love to you.
