J. Carl James, 89, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, from natural causes.
Carl was born April 5, 1924, in Provo, Utah, to Ferris and Vera James. Carl grew up on and around Muddy Ranch near Park Valley, Utah. He attended high school in Brigham City and received a master's degree from Utah State University in Logan. While there, he met Joyce Hendrickson, and they were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 30, 1948.
Carl served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He achieved the rank of major and served as a bombardier aboard B-24 and B-29 aircraft.
Carl's careers included teaching, animal husbandry, animal nutrition and livestock breeding and genetics. He excelled at formulating nutritional supplements for swine and cattle.
After retirement, Carl and Joyce moved to Evanston, Wyo., to be nearer to their children and grandchildren, and they later moved to Salt Lake City.
At various times, Carl enjoyed boxing, skeet shooting, hunting and fishing, benchrest shooting, building custom rifles and golf. In his youth, he was an accomplished rodeo cowboy.
Carl is survived by his children, Brent C. (Eve) James, Carolyn (Sam) Giannini, Alan F. James, Blair C. (Jonna) James and Greg C. (Bobbi) James; brothers, Lynn (Marcele) James and Sydney (Carolyn) James; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; and daughter, Sherry.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave. in Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls.
