WILTON * Julia H. Biss passed away on Saturday night, Aug. 25, at home surrounded by her family after fighting a long battle with cancer. She was 85.
Born on Dec. 20, 1921, in Wilton, N.Y., Julia was the daughter of the late John and Helen Osifchin Biss.
She was also predeceased by two brothers, Steven and Michael Biss and a nephew, Robert Biss.
In 1945, she joined the Woman's Army Corps (WAC) and later the Woman's Air Force Corps (WAF) and served during World War II at various locations throughout the U.S. in the areas of communications and range operations in support of pilot training. Julia was extremely proud of her wartime service and the fact that her three brothers were all serving their country at the same times during the war. Her last assignment was at the Pentagon as a pioneer in the area of modern data processing. Julia was part of the inaugural parade for Dwight Eisenhower.
After returning to civilian life with an honorable discharge and several ribbons and metals, she worked for General Electric Co. for many years before retiring in 1985.
She was an adventurous, well-read, independent woman who enjoyed sailing in the Caribbean in the early 1950s. Julia was very proud of her Slovak heritage and visited the Checz-Slovak ancestral areas of Europe where her parents immigrated from. She traveled to many religious shrines throughout Eurpoe and the U.S.
Some of her hobbies were weaving, rug hooking, clowning, genealogy and she was a phenomenal collector. A devout Catholic, Julia loved spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include one brother, John D. Biss of Wilton.
Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373).
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Ave.
Burial with full military honors will take place at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Road, Schuylerville, N.Y.
