We were out of town and missed the passing of this wonderful man. What a delight! A talented, kind and sensitive man who was able to bloom with his musical career despite the social limitations of the pre-Civil Rights era. Never bitter, always positive. Embracing the present situation without judgment of the past. He was an extremely talented voice that transcended the barriers of his day.
He was our instructor for our classes at the Senior University at Indiana University Northwest.
Thank you for being part of our lives, Garrett! We cherish your memory...

Cope Family, may God's peace be with you during this time. I remember Mr. Cope as an example of the best of the Gary Educational system. As my 6th grade teacher at Carver Elementary, he exposed our class to the arts, including black poets, musicians, dancers, and to the theater. Many times, he packed several of us into his station wagon, purchased the tickets, and shared with us some of the latest plays in nearby Chicago. Yes, I remember the nicknames he had for all of his students...he called me 'Uncle Milty' (smile). Yes, Mr Cope - teacher and encourager - was one of a kind.

Dear Cope Family,
I am sad to hear of Mr. Cope's passing. I recently had the pleasure of meeting him while some of his visits to the Methodist Hospital. I worked in registration and he and his wife are the most pleasant people I have ever had the priviledge of meeting. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
