One of the nicest men I have ever known. I remember Nick walking the beat when I was a kid and he always had a happy attitude. He was one of those good souls that brightened everyone's day.
It was an honor to have served with Nick and it was always a treat to run into him after he retired (usually at Cortese's). I'm sure that God was just as happy to see him Friday as I always was. He will truly be missed.

Shirley and Famiky,
I am so sorry for the passing of Nick. he was such a great man and my friend since the day I started working at the Arena right out of college some 40 years ago. I will never forget all the wonderful memories we all made together. He was a special person, loved by all and will forever be remembered. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the services since I am out of town, but please accept my sincere condolences.
To the Markatos family I offer my deep sympathy. Nick was a dam fine officer and a real gentleman. I knew him for almost 50 years and feel real loss in-as-much as the type of man he was is hard to come by and admirable when found. I met him during a hard time in my life and he always made me feel accepted as a friend.
My sincerest condolences to the family. Nick was an absolutely fantastic person. I first met him back in 1981 when I joined the Binghamton YMCA Athletic Center and would see him there very often during the 11 years I was a member before I moved out of the area. He always had a smile and would spend time joking and talking with you. I also always enjoyed running into him around town as a policeman or otherwise. RIP Nick, I am sure you are bringing a lot of joy to heaven already !
Shirley, Frosene and families- we are deeply saddened by the passing of Nick. Everyone who knows him knows what a good person and a good friend that he is. Until we meet again.
Mike, Tina and Steve Guley
Shirley, Nene and family,
I was sorry to hear of the passing of this jewel of a man. I have many fond memories of Mr. Markatos (as we usually called him - though he would allow "Nick"). He was always very kind to us through the years; and I will be reminiscing as I pray for you all in the days ahead.
Shirley / Family
Nick was one of the best person / police officer I ever worked with. He made coming to work or working a side job with him a lot of fun. I will miss him and the singing. Rest in peace my friend. Paul Mollo / Sun City AZ
To the Markato's family;
I was very sorry to hear of Nick's passing. I first met Nick when he was working at Peternicks Restaurant on Washington St next to the YMCA back in 1954 when I first started working for Coca-Cola.
I can still remember him sing Pepsi jingles to me as I delivered the Coke. After he went on to the Binghamton Police Department I would run into him all over downtown Binghamton. He always had a smile, a joke and a jingle for me. There will never be another person like Nick, he was the greatest.
My prayers are with you all during this sad time.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Shirley & Family,
Please accept my condolences. Nick, as you know, is one of a kind. Thoughtful, sincere, honest, gregarious and fun loving. We've lost a great one, one of Binghamton's Finest.
