Jack was a kind and very interesting man. I was sorry to hear of his passing

Jack and his partner Dick Couper were on my route while I was in high school and they both helped to motivate me to attend Hamilton College. He was just great to this now old high schooler.

My dad was an insurance man in Binghamton in the 1950's and I have been an insurance man in Elmira for 34 years. When I started in the business my dad told me that Cooper Ackerman Sampson was the class act in Binghamton, so when I first met Jack, I asked him if he knew my dad. To my delight he did, and had the most gracious things to say about him. Yes, Jack was a gentleman, but to me, an insurance icon.

Dear Fred and Family,

As the first executive director and president of the SUNY-Binghamton Foundation in 1976, there were three people who were responsible for the creation of the University's Harpur Forum: President Clifford Clark who tasked me with the challenge of building a bridge between the university and community; Jack Russell, who as the volunteer president of the SUNY-Binghamton Foundation provided direction to the concept of the Harpur Forum by identifying Robert Best, chairman of Security Mutual Life Insurance Company as the most appropriate person in the community to become the first president of the Harpur Forum; and Mr. Best who over lunch at the Binghamton Club with Jack Russell and myself heard the proposal for the concept and creation of the Harpur Forum Program and agreed immediately to become the first community leader to inaugurate and head the program that is now nearly four decades old and has long-ago achieved its objective of building a bridge between the university and community. To these distinguished three leaders I would add the names of George Hinman and Glen Bartle who were both ardent supporters of the Harpur Forum, and were perhaps the first community-university leaders who had the idea of building a bridge between the town and campus many many years ago.

It was a honor to know and to work closely with all of these visionary leaders in the Binghamton, NY community.

Your father was a fine man who I thought of fondly over the years. He will be missed sorely by all who knew him.
