Garry KIERNAN Obituary

Santa Rosa - Garry Joseph Kiernan, M.D., age 61, passed away at his home in Santa Rosa on Thursday, November 1, 2012 following a heroic battle with cancer. He was born in Boston, MA on October 31, 1951, to Leo Edward and Louise Constance (Murphy) Kiernan. He was united in marriage to Nancy Lynn Schwartz for 30 years. Garry was a renowned physician. He graduated Magna cum Laude from Georgetown University, School of Medicine, first in a class of 210. He completed his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. He was also a highly accomplished classical concert pianist, having trained at University of Fribourg and the Conservatory of Music, Fribourg in Switzerland prior to entering medical school. He is remembered for his brilliant mind, gentle wit, and loving disposition. He was a very kind and caring person, who, in turn, was well loved and respected by all who knew him. He treated every one he met with honor regardless of their station in life. Among his countless recognitions and accomplishments, he felt the donation of one of his kidneys to his wife Nancy to be his greatest achievement. He is survived by his loving, devoted, and beloved wife, Nancy; his two little dogs, Mrs. Honey Bun and Cookie Mervyna; his mother and step-father Connie and Jack Peterson; four siblings, Leo (Marie) Kiernan, Jeannie (George) Yee, Connie (Bruce) Masucci, and Brian Kiernan, as well as many nieces, nephews and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo; and his father and mother in law, Mervyn and Pauline Schwartz. At Garry's request, no services will be held. Memorials may be made to the pet charity of your choice, St Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the National Kidney Foundation Daniels Chapel of the Roses 525-3730

I WAS JUST DOWN ON STATION 2 AT MCDH IN FORT BRAGG CA TALKING ABOUT THE BEST DOCTOR I'V EVER KNOWN. WHEN I SAID DR. KIERNAN A NURSE SAID HOW SAD IT WAS HE PASSED AWAY. I'M SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT. WHAT I REMEMBER THE MOST WAS HIS KINDNESS TO EVERYONE. I ALSO REMEMBER HOW HIS WIFE NANCY WOULD CALL THE ER AND ASK ME IF HER "BOYFRIEND" WAS AVAILABLE ABD HE ALWAYS WAS FOR HER. SUE SPARACINO

Garry and I just missed reconnection of an old friendship in Fribourg back in 1972 after I finally found a picture of him again on the internet on October 29th 2012. One year ago I have been very happy after searching for more than 2 years a person of who had forgotten the last name. It was a long and difficult search, probably because Garry was not popular on the internet but popular taking time caring of his friends and patients. Now, this obituary that makes him easy to find on the net… After reading the messages on this obituary, I realize that Garry did not change from the very nice friend I had at that time and I wish Nancy all the best to recover plain serenity after such a loss.

Dear Nancy,
Ever since you and Garry became one with another I have found comfort in the fact that you were always together ("attached at the hip", according to Pauline), in love and the perfect match for each other. The terrible news of his passing reached me when, for some reason unknown to me, I entered his name on google. The Earth can ill afford the loss of a man like Garry. I am profoundly saddened for your pain and lifted up by the way this tragedy has touched those who know and love the two of you.
Loving spirits survive. They live in us. Know he is still with you. For that I am grateful.
Wishing you healing, peace and happiness.

After a busy shift yesterday as I walked to my car my thought was this I sure miss Dr. Kiernan in so many ways your presence at the hospital changed the flow and many of us blessed to work with you knew that no matter what the shift and the patients had going on everyone was going to be ok. You just did that so naturally it amazed me. It's these times that I as your nurse friend miss you the most. Your professionalism is unmatched. You are missed!

Oh my. A dear friend from Natick just found this information. So so sad to see this, but so proud to hear of Garry's meaningful life and career. Garry was a v. good friend back in those halcyon days of grades K-8. We'd explore the woods of Sherwood, climb trees, practice pull-ups, and walk on the bottom of the lake by his house holding rocks to weigh us down. We'd practice for the latter by having breath-holding contests in Ms. Goodspeed's [astonishingly-boring] 8th-grade reading classes. Gentle, funny, smart then, as thru all his life. Blessings to all his friends, family, and co-workers.

On a whim, I Googled Garry as a way of looking up my long lost friend Nancy, whom I knew from Chico State. I only met Garry once, but knew from numerous exchanges with Nancy what a special and unique relationship they had. It was a marriage to be in awe of as they were so devoted and in love. Because of their extraordinary connection, I can only imagine the pain and loss that Nancy has suffered from Garry's passing.
Though we have been separated by time and miles, you are in my thoughts Nancy. I know you and Garry must have wonderful friends who are helping you in this difficult time, but nothing can fill the void he has left in your life. I hope you find some peace in the comfort of your friends and pets.

I, too, was a classmate of Garry's at Georgetown. He helped me to gain the confidence I needed to continue my studies. He was a great guy then, and obviously maintained that persona (I wouldn't have expected it to be any other way). So sorry for your/our loss. Peace.

My dear Brotha, I have had to wait this long to send a message to you and Nancy. I am in the mountains now where I feel closer to heaven and you and Dad. I'm not sure how you feel about heaven, but know I will see you there one day. You have been an inspiration to me for so many years. From my book at age 12 which inspired me to re read on my trip out to see you in October to the time you taught me to make a Swiss cheese omelet after your trip to Switzerland.. I learned how to play chess and will cherish the set you brought home for me from Europe. I will always remember the long talks we had while you were living in Nevada about your love of the earth. Funny how we both found our love of horticulture at the same time. Both of our struggles with cancer was another connection we unfortunately shared. I am blessed with survivorship for now, but I know I will have an angel waiting for me when my time comes. It makes me feel not so afraid. I miss you terribly and will likely feel this way until my time comes. In reading all of the lovely messages from your business friends, they knew your heart, your love of caring for people who
needed you and appreciated you, it can only make me wonder what God has in plan for you.. You are and have always been a gift for me. I will see you when God is ready for me..
I love you Garry

Dear Nancy, I am a longtime friend of Helen's and she has spoken highly of you and Garry to me many times over the years. Even though I never had the privilege to meet Garry, (although on some level I think you and did meet once in Wyoming during a time I was visiting,) I feel like the world has lost a dear man, a kind heart, and I know he will be missed by many. I am so sorry for you loss, I have you in my thoughts & prayers

Garry - your life was a celebration of kindness, passion, brilliance and service. I knew you as Nancy's beloved. You were the man that captured her heart and communed with her soul. You loved unconditionally and left a legacy of hope, healing, laughter and love... You truly made the world a better place... that is why you are a hero in the stories we tell Sophie. I regret not knowing you better and miss you deeply. Rest in peace.

I have worked with many Physicians, none more finer then Dr. Kiernan. He was another Marcus Welby, he chuckled when I would tell him that afterall that is the show that inspired me to be a nurse. His love of life and people came naturally, it did not matter where you came from, he cared. We had many chances to discuss life and what our interests during the shift. He was a breath of fresh air on a busy day on the MedOnc floor and to all that knew him. I was fortunate to call him friend.

I knew Garry through his lovely wife and partner, Nancy. Through the years, Nancy and I enjoyed terrific hikes and conversations. Garry was always close by in Nancy's mind, even when he was away at work. I had the privilege of visiting Nancy and Garry in Nevada several years ago. Ironically, it was Garry and I that took a hike together one day while Nancy stayed home. During that hike, however, I learned from Garry the way that Nancy had indelibly imprinted herself and her creative, beautiful spirit on him when they first met. I also learned about the events that caused Garry to move from a career in music to medicine. As a musician myself, I was moved by his forthright and honest evaluation of the classical music business. Yet he continued to love and play the repertoire as much as possible. I will never forget hearing him perform a beautiful Spanish piece on the piano when we all lived in Wyoming. The exotic quality of the music coupled with Garry's superb musicianship and technique has remained with me for decades. His sweet and gentle spirit will remain in my heart even as I continue to cherish my friendship with Nancy. My love always, Helen.

I cannot believe that Dr. Kiernan is no longer in this world. He was such a wonderful person and doctor. So kind, always had a smile on his face and was just always positive and friendly.
If more people were like Dr. Kiernan we would all be better because of it. I worked at SR Memorial on one of the floors that Dr. Kiernan frequently visited and that was well over 7 years ago and I still can remember his gracefulness and compassion for others.
He was genuine and real. I will always remember him.

Oh, Nancy, we are so sorry. Your Garry was a special man, and you were his great champion. Dad still talks about how Garry came to the house, diagnosed him when others failed to do so, and checked on him morning and night when he was in the hospital. We are ever grateful to both of you. (He grew tasty potatoes, too!) We hurt for you and we love you, and pray that God will comfort you in your loss as only he can. Our love to you, Honey, and Cookie.

Dr. Kiernan was one of the good guys. His calm and gentle ways with his patients and his fellow workers was unusual in a profession that was normally very ego driven. He was never to busy to stop and answer my questions or help when I had a problem with a patient. His passing has made the light in the world much dimmer for us all.

Words can not express the deep sorrow I feel to learn about your passing. I met Dr Kiernan in memorial hospital and I can tell he is one of the most gentle soul I ever met in my life. I had the opportunity to care for him as a patient recently and as usual he was the most greatful and gentle person I met in both situations. I remember being nervous while doing an EKG on him and accidentally put the leads incorrectly, and with his most compassionate and respectful voice he pointed to me the error. I always hoped he would come back to work with us in memorial hospital, but God had better plans for him.
I wish his family God's comfort in this hard time and I hope God rest his soul in enternal peace he fought the good battle and he won. You will greatly be missed by all the people you touched in your life

One of my favorite moments with Dr. Kiernan was when I was working on 3E. He told me how that a family member came up and he was there (being the good secretary at that moment) and he introduced himself "Hi, I'm Dr. Kiernan, can I help you." and the family said..."Oh, are you a nurse here?" we both thought that was pretty funny and from that point on...He was Dr. Kiernan, RN. There are many other stories that he would tell and his kindness and his love for his wife...and it was really special if you ever saw him talk about her. Even though I moved to Oregon a number of years ago, I have still talked about him and some of his funny stories. There are just some people in life that stick with you and make an impact. Dr. Kiernan is one of those people that definately made an impact and I will forever appreciate his kind way in which he talked to you and how he knew everyone. What a terrible loss for his family, friends, the medical community and the community in which he lived. My heartfelt wishes go out to his loved ones and may his memories and legacy comfort you in the days to come.

Sir. You were such a wonderful person, a gentleman, a loving doctor, an inspiration to many. Your gentle and caring demeanor lightened the burden of the staff you worked with as well as the patients. I was a CNA then when I first had the privilege to know you in our floor, it was amazing that you treated everybody equally with your gentleness. RIP doctor and my prayers to you and to your family.

I first met Dr. Kiernan while a patient at SRMH. Wow, what a fantastic doctor! Several years later I was lying in the emergency room at SRMH again in some serious distress and he recognized me when he turned around from working with another patient. His tone of voice would warm a group of stressed nurses and staff. His medicine was thoughtful, considerate and responsible both ethically and fiscally. I am sure given time he would have mentored many more and would have been considered a father figure. I worked with him in health and spent time with him in sickness and both were a huge honor! When I need a doctor please emulate Garry Kiernan; we lost a shining example.
