Norm was a firefighting brother and friend who lost his battle with cancer this week, with his family by his side in his home in Eugene Oregon. I had a chance to visit with Norm back in june , while driving up to Seattle. We talked about old times , shared some memorable calls we had been on together years ago, and had some frank conversation regarding his condition, and the mountain ahead of him, fighting for his life one day at a time. He showed me his special place upstairs , where he had placed his firefighting memorabillia on the wall, including some old Petaluma Fire Dept pictures and collectives from our era within the PFD. We both knew too well that his time was limited , but he showed incredible strength in the face of death.
I recalled how years ago when I was facing uncertainty during a career changing injury with a young family to support, Norm , a senior firefighter was there, supporting me , reassuring me that positive things would follow, that he had my back.
Norm spent his entire career rescueing others, trying to make a difference in this world, fighting for those in need. He fought many battles and saved lives.
Now Norm has fought perhaps his toughest battle , courageously , and he is gone......
Norm, thank you for everything, for having my back when times were tough , for being a brother to me, a friend.
Rest easy, my friend, I've got your back.

Dear Diana, Doug and Debbie, our hearts cry with you for the loss of Norm, who left us way too early. He was such a brave soul, cheerful and optimistic till the end.
We remember fondly the wonderful times we had together, be it at your pool side, at your favorite Chinese restaurant or at Morton's Hot springs back when the kids were little.
He never let life's obstacles wear him down. During the devastating floods of 1981 & 86, through his illnesses, he always kept a positive and inspiring attitude.
Norm was one of the most down to earth, cheerful persons I have ever known. Always willing to help, wanting to make the world a better place. He fought city hall to improve the well being and livelihood of his fellow fireman. He liked justice and fairness above all. Though stubborn at times he had an incredible open mind, always willing to learn and acquire new experiences.
Norm, we'll miss you so.
Love Jan & Yigal

I was so shocked to hear this!! My brother George Hunt, Norm's brother Bill & Bill were the best of friends. So many fun memories of the three during & after high school! I have a wonderful picture of my oldest daughter when she was three wearing Norm"s fire hat & boots. To Diana, Douglas & Deborah he was the best!! Praying for God's peace and comfort in the loss of your husband, father & grandfather.

In 1990 (in his capacity as Local 1415 V.P.) Norm was responsible for researching and negotiating the PEMCHA
benefit that active and retired firefighters now enjoy. We are
forever grateful to you, Norm.

Norm used to ride with me as a Police Reserve, then we shared a few cups of coffee at the PFD. He was a friend a real great guy. My condolences to his family.

I was proud to have been Norm's friend for nearly 40 years, and his firefighting brother for 17 years in the Petaluma Fire Department, during which time it was my pleasure to be his ambulance partner at the scene of many medical emergencies, and his coworker at several memorable fires. Norm was also my union brother at Local 1415 IAFF, and a true labor hero. As chairman of the Binding Arbitration Committee he vowed to virtually "camp" at local supermarkets until enough valid signatures were collected to put binding arbitration for police and firefighters on the November '90 ballot. He also co-authored the successful ballot argument that made binding arbitration part of the negotiating process between labor and management. We and our families shared many wonderful times together, including backyard parties and dinners. And could Norm cook! His seafood pasta was a firehouse treat, and his home-cooked Saint Patrick's Day honey-glazed corned beef was melt-in-your-mouth delicious: both meals causing moans of gastronomic delight. Norm also made exercise time at the Redwood Club a pleasure as we walked side-by-side on our respective treadmills. He had a ready wit and a great disposition, and I was made better by knowing him. He is in my heart now. I will always miss him, and will treasure many fond memories of him. His was my buddy. And it is agonizing to say goodbye to such a dear friend.
