I'm so sorry! Was just thinking about Steve and googled his name only to discover he's gone. Some tears.

Steve was on the Northcoast Regional Water Quality Control Board when I was back in the mid 1970s and early 1980s. He was one of my favorites and was so much his own person. Great sense of humor, tremendous knowledge about all things scientific, gentle fellow. Always spoke highly of his family. He would call once every couple of years just to check on how life was going. We both shared having daughters named Rebecca. And he gave me an open invitation to come with my husband to spend the night any time we were in the area. We never did.

And reading these notes from his students allows me to see how much they valued him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Steve was a student of mine at San Lorenzo High School. I am very sorry to hear of his untimely passing; may your loving memories of him sustain you through out this time.

I was in Steve's first class in 1974 and by the time I graduated, he was my mentor and was instrumental in both my outlook on the environment and my life's work. It was through work as Steve's field assistant that I was able to become a Farallons biologist, a job he offered me not because I was the best candidate for his work but as a leg up and into my dream job. That act of kindness ultimately changed my life's direction. Without that open door I would have never had the opportunity. We remained in touch over the years and he was the first person I wrote when I became the manager of the group responsible for creating NIKE's sustainability metrics vowing to carry two of his core teachings into that work: "Its all about water & revolution from within". All these years later Steve has remained a touchstone and the most important influence in my education. It was only last night when I was looking for his home address online for a surprise visit that I learned of this tragedy. My heart goes out to you. I loved the guy.

I was a student of Steve's in the mid '80s. Was shocked to read this when I did a search of his name. I wrote his and other ENSP profs quotes in a notebook, and I still quote him. A funny guy. Will never forget him. Best wishes.

I knew Steve and Marthe thru our time dancing together in Marilyn's Folk Dance class at SRJC. Steve was a warm and humble man who never spoke of his accomplishments, many of which I learned about by reading the words of others here. We will miss Steve very much and our hearts go out to Marthe and his family. Please know that you are in our thoughts and we hope that when you are feeling up to it Marthe, you will come back and dance with us again. Until then, please accept our sincerest condolences and love...

Dear Norwick family,
I just heard yesterday about your tragic and untimely loss of Steve. I had the pleasure to study under his tutaledge from 1978-1980 as an undergrad at SSU. He was a pleasure of a man to learn from, with his boundless enthusiasm and good nature. I occassionaly maintained contact with him over the years, one of the only profs I've ever done this with.
My heart reaches out to all of you. I hope you can attain some solace from the fact that over here he is remembered and highly thought of.
My deepest sympathies to you all.
Ye'che zichro baruch - blesswed be his memory.

Dear friends,
I knew Steve and you through his beloved father, Sydney, my own father's(Eddie Cohn)close friend. I remember visiting all of you a good while back, and how we enjoyed sushi you made and seeing the special art works in your home. Sydney was so proud of Steven and you! You are in my prayers and heart.

Dear "Steve" family,
I send my deepest prayers to you during this difficult time. I was a returning student who Steve mentored through the Environmental Studies program. He was so kind and compassionate. He had me bring my young daughters to a night class so that I could attend a needed class. Many of us felt that the kind of learning we gained as a result of Steve's classes were what every citizen should know to make informed decisions. Once I received my teaching credential, I would still visit Steve to brainstorm earth study lessons for my students, really just a reason to stay in his orbit. As the years have gone by since Steve's classes, I thank Steve for so many valuable lessons.

Steve was the best teacher and college friend ever. Once when I felt guilty about using my car too much, he reminded me that it's ok because my work could far compensate for the damage. Still, I never make useless trips, and think of him everytime I "run around". Carolyn Dixon
