Just before this happened I was thinking I needed to contact him to tell him about a school garden project. He was my professor in the late 90s and his words of encouragement did a lot to shape my life. Everything from warnings not to buy a house built on top of serpentine to be part of the solution, not part of the problem have gone through my head often for the past 15 years. This past week I attended a week-long intensive for gardening teachers and we spent two days learning about soils. During these two days Dr. Norman Arancon equated soil chemistry to love. I remember Dr. Norwick telling us to do what we love, the money will come. My life and I'm sure the lives of many are much richer thanks to him. Even though I haven't seen him for many years, I'll miss him.

Steve always had a smile for me. I was in awe of him when I saw him on his bike. He lived what he taught. His life was a mitzvah. Deepest condolences.

I am very sad that Steve is gone from this world. One thing I can do is to remember what a good, inventive, and gentle man he was - I'm sure the water quality in heaven will be much improved now! ;) - and the BEST thing I can do is to learn as well as I can from Steve to be as principled and kind and forgiving as he was. May his spirit live on!

I know I am a better person because Steve was my teacher, mentor, and friend. He was great person, compassionate, warm, funny, intelligent, and above all the best example on how you can live a right life. His physical presence will be missed, but he remains will all of us.

To the Norwich Family, Steve was a bright light during my time in ENSP at SSU. He always had time for you even if you were not in one of his classes. My heart and prayers go out to you at this time.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
May God heal your hearts with his swiftness and completness.

I graduated in the Environmental Studies class of 2000. Steve is the professor I remember most because he was the most engaging of them. Not only was he always available for an informal chat or an in-depth discussion on geology and soil science, but I loved him for practicing what he preached. While others talked about being more environmentally minded and eco-friendly, Steve lived it. I attribute part of my determination to become an NPS park ranger to Steve Norwick and his encouragement to pursue my dreams.

Steve was a mentor and teacher to both my husband and I in the late 1970's. He made everything wonderful seem possible. 30 years later he helped out daughter navigate her freshman year at SSU. We have lost a remarkable human being. Deepest sympathy to his family. He talked about them so much you felt as if you knew them.

I will remember Steve as my environmental studies professor, for his love of life and the passion he expressed for learning. But my fondest memories will be when we'd "bump into each other" in local places where he would always give me a hug and kiss.
I will miss you, Steve. My deepest sympathy goes out to your family.

Steve was my most memorable teacher at SSU and was a mentor and friend to our whole family in the years since. The world has lost a wonderful person and great teacher.
