SHARON SINGLETON Obituary

Sharon Gholson Singleton, of Petersburg, Va., departed this life on July 20, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Alfornia Gholson; maternal grandparents, Trustee Thornton Robinson and Carrie Robinson; and paternal grandparents, John and Essie Gholson. She was a native of Dinwiddie, Va. The city of Petersburg lost a shining star and warrior.

Sharon was born Sept. 1, 1950. She was fun-loving, creative and lived life without apologies. Sharon loved community, art, animals, reggae music and many other things. She was known as Scoozie to those in her closest circle.

Sharon committed her life to Christ at an early age and joined Eleven Oak Baptist Church in DeWitt, Va. She later became a member of Mt. Poole Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health declined. She was a member of the Business Ministry.

After raising her son and working 15-years at Allied Signal, she discovered her passion for art. Sharon graduated from Richard Bland College (summa cum laude) and then Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Art. She opened Creative Imprints, an art studio, in Old Towne Petersburg, and worked as a sworn officer at the Animal Shelter in the City of Petersburg for many years. Sharon spent her final years as a youth counselor for Pathways, a non-profit organization working to rebuild and strengthen the City of Petersburg.

She was co-founder of Petersburg Communities Inc., a non-profit organization focused on the preservation of rich black history in the city of Petersburg, and was passionate about the organization's goals of providing opportunities to uplift the city's youth where she served as registered agent and vice chair. She was an original board member of the Triangle Center of Development and was instrumental in the development of the first and ongoing Halifax Jazz Festival for the first five years of production. Sharon was presently serving as a board member for the city of Petersburg on Community Development Block Grant Board and had been serving for many years. She wrote youth training programs for young adults, which are still being used at Pathways.

Sharon was instrumental in the ongoing fight to preserve the civil rights history of Petersburg.

Sharon will be remembered as a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, dedicated youth advocate and community activist.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her only son, Michael Goodwyn: loving mother, Viola Gholson of Petersburg, Va.; devoted sisters, Angela Miller (Ashton) of Dinwiddie, Va., and Pamela Eddie (Elliott) of Richmond, Va.; devoted niece, Natarsha Batts of Petersburg, Va.; brothers, Jerome Gholson of Richmond, Va., Alvin Gholson (Dora) of Charlottesville, Va., Keith Boisseau (Miriam) of Hampton, Va., Barry Gholson of Richmond, Va., and Aubrey Gholson of Richmond, Va.; aunts; Carrie Whitaker of Baltimore, Alease Whitaker of Richmond, Va., and Thelma Gholson of DeWitt, Va.; uncle; James Robinson of Long Island, N.Y.; devoted friends, Mary S. Howard, Stewart Springs and members of Pink Challengers and Petersburg Communities Inc; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and many friends.

A homegoing service will be held at noon Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Mt. Poole Baptist Church, Ford, with the pastor, the Rev. Stephen Pugh, officiating, and the Rev. Roy Spratley eulogizing. Burial will commence at the church cemetery.

Public viewing will be held at the Petersburg Chapel on Thursday, July 24, 2014. The family will be receiving visitors at the residence, 133 S. Market St., from 5 to 9 Thursday evening.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, 530 S. Sycamore St., Petersburg, 804-863-4411.

Though I never had the pleasure of meeting you, your sister, Pam Eddie, shared wonderful stories of you with us. My heart and prayers go out to the family. I wanted to share a bible verse with the family that has served as a comfort to me when I lost a loved one," For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Psalm 30:5 KJV

To Sharon's son and family:
I have such fond memories of Sharon. We were school mates and the dearest of friends. What a legacy she leaves behind! It's not what you have accomplished for yourself in life but what you have accomplished to make a difference for others. It's obvious that you fulfilled your purpose for being here. Now, others - for years and years to come will enjoy the fruits of your labor. Sleep well, my dear friend. GOD IS PLEASED!
