Augustus Monos Obituary


Augustus Monos, 89, Reading, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of the late Angeline (Zeppos) Monos.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as Seaman Second Class. He later

received a B.S. degree in Education from Lock Haven State College in 1954 and a M.Ed. in Psychology from Temple University in 1959. He was certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to serve in the capacities of

science, social studies, guidance counselor, school

psychologist, supervisor of school psychological services and supervisor of special education.

His work experience consisted of teaching Social Studies and Science to secondary students for four years and serving as their Guidance Counselor for one year at Schuylkill

Valley School District (1955-1960); Clinical Psychologist for Family Guidance Institute (1960-1961); Secondary Guidance Counselor at West Chester Senior High School, West Chester, Pa. (1961-1962); and for a period of 24 years he served the Reading School District as both Director of Testing and Research (1962-1969) and as Director of

Special Education (1969 to retirement in 1987). He had

also served as the President of the Reading School District Association for three years from 1978 through 1981.

He served as Psychologist for the Head Start program in summers of 1966 and 1967. He prepared and submitted a federal ESEA Title 1 Project entitled "After School Study Program," which was approved for two years. He also coordinated the implementation of this project which provided students the opportunity to receive special help with their homework from teachers employed after school hours.

He also prepared and received approval from the State Bureau of Vocational Education to implement a vocational program for Special Education students at Reading Senior High School.

As Director of Testing and Research, Dr. Ralph C. Geigle, Superintendent of the Reading School District at that

time, had appointed Monos as Chairman of a committee to research and determine the feasibility of a Community College for Reading and Berks County and prepare

application for state approval after the need and approval by the Reading School Board was established.

He also taught graduate Psychology courses at Penn State University, Berks Campus, for ten years on a part-time basis and was a part-time instructor in General Psychology for employees of American Bank at Alvernia

College for two years.

For nine summers, he managed the East Reading

Community Pool, the Northwest Community Pool and the Berkshire Country Club Pool.

In the past, he was a member of the Reading Jaycees, Reading Rotary Club, Board member of the Y.M.C.A., and a member of Education Committee for United Fund.

He was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and the A.H.E.P.A. organization.

He is survived by his son, Dean G. Monos and his wife, Margaret Monos, West Hartford, Conn.; his son, Christopher M. Monos and his wife, Shari Monos, Wyomissing, Pa.; and four grandchildren: Timothy, Andrew, Alexa and Olivia.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 26, at 11 a.m., at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 E. Wyomissing Blvd., Reading, PA 19611, where friends may gather from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Education fund.
