On October 11, 2010, our angel on earth, Maria Ines Becerra, was called to heaven.
Maria was born on April 20, 1922, in Nogalitos, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She was 88 years old.
Maria married her husband, Juan Becerra, on October 9, 1939, in Mexico. After briefly residing in Texas, they settled in Porterville, California, in 1957. Together, Maria and Juan had 12 children, 8 who survived. Though they suffered many hardships throughout their journey from Mexico to the United States, Maria often said that, in California, she lived the life of a queen. She was tremendously proud of herself when, at the age of 75 , she earned her U.S. Citizenship.
A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Maria was known affectionately to us all as "Mom." Mom was a phenomenal woman with many interests. She loved to garden and was so proud of her beautiful flowers. Mom's children remember her being a master of making something out of nothing. Every morning, Mom would make a basketful of homemade tortillas and fresh chile for her family. Those that were fortunate enough to have sampled Mom's cooking describe her food as the most delicious ever tasted. Mom was rarely seen without her apron and her braids (trensas) as she sewed, crocheted, cooked, and took care of her loved ones.
Mom loved to watch her Dodgers play, and at 10:00 every weekday morning, she tuned in to see Bob Barker on The Price is Right. Mom especially enjoyed those Sunday evenings when her children and grandchildren gathered around the kitchen table to lose their money to her in a competitive game of poker. Mom had a great sense of humor, and her impeccable timing and straight face when telling jokes never failed to keep us laughing.
In addition to her love of life and laughter, Mom was a devout Catholic who said her prayers every night. She lived her life by the Golden Rule, always treating others with kindness and respect. Mom had a special devotion to La Virgen de Guadalupe; she had two altars venerating La Virgen in her home, which she decorated every December.
No words can describe how much Mom meant to us; all in her family agree that we are who we are because of Mom. We are going to miss her radiant smile, soft voice, and tender touch dearly, but we know that the best of Mom lives on in all of us. We need only look to each other to be reminded that Mom is still with us.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Juan (July 20, 1993) and four children. She is survived by one brother, Manuel Castillo, and one sister, Maria Castillo, both residing in Mexico. She is also survived by her eight children: sons Sabino Becerra, Lupe Becerra, and Tim Becerra (Ernestina); and daughters Carmen Chavez (Mario), Guadalupe Galvan (Pedro), Janie Flores (Richard), Rosie Becerra, and Maria "Susie" Cruz (Ramon). Additionally, Mom is survived by 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Myers Chapel on Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM. A Rosary will also be held at Myers Chapel on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anne's Church on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 9:00 AM. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
