As a child, my Uncle and I would watch the Friday night fights. My hero, the fighter I most admired, was Carmen Basilio. I remember him after every fight kneeling, making the sign of the Cross and saying a prayer of Thanksgiving. A humble man showing his faith in God. Mr. Basilio, you answered the final bell and now wear the belt of Salvation. You were a role model to many, even to people you never met. Reste in Pacis.

He said, "Sweat."
Always, a quick wit. Always laughing, loving, friendly, and thoughtful of those who admired his fame and aggression in the ring. He didn't sting like a bee. He fought like a tiger. I loved the guy. Love you too, Josie. Love & Prayers, Pajama Lady

I grew up watching the fights every week with my grandfather, Paul Cochia, during the fifties in Bpt., Ct. and my love for boxing continues to this day.
Out of all the boxing greats that we saw, Carmen Basilio was my favorite. Before each fight began, I can still see Carmen in his corner kneeling and saying a short prayer and making the sign of the cross and go on to give the toughest performance each and everytime that had us sitting at the edge of our seats shouting our heads off. He had class in and out of the ring. God rest his soul and our deepest condolences to the entire family. Memory Eternal.

A good childhood memory for me was watching Friday Night Fights on our B/W TV with my father and grandfather in the 1950's. Whenever Mr. Basilio fought, there was extra excitement for the event in my house. To me, at age 8, 9 or 10, he was bigger than life. I wish I had told him "thank you" for competing with all he had and for the pleasure it brought me to watch him compete. As I reflect now on those Friday Nights, I believe he was one of my first teachers about courage, toughness and commitment. May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted in their loss.
