Stephens, Rebecca
Rebecca Stephens passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013 surrounded by the love of her family and caregivers. She was born on May 5, 1924 in downtown Los Angeles, the second of five children. Rebecca went through Los Angeles public schools, proudly graduating from Belmont High. Shortly after graduation she entered the WAC –the Women's Army Corps – where she faithfully served her country as a medical stenographer. It was while stationed in San Francisco that she met her future husband, Robert B. Stephens, at a USO dance. They married in his home state of Maine in 1949 and settled in Los Angeles where their family grew to include five children throughout the 50's and 60's. They moved to South Pasadena in 1966 and she lived in the same house until her death. Through the years she served as a noon aide at Monterey Hills School, a sales clerk at Swan Stationers, and a bank teller at Bank of America, never venturing very far from her beloved South Pasadena. She also assisted her husband throughout his education by typing all his research papers and, in their retirement, doing all the bookwork for their rental properties. Her grandchildren brought her special joy in her later years and she cared for three of them on a regular basis while they were babies and preschoolers. Her husband, Robert B. Stephens, predeceased her in 2011. She is survived by one sister, Doraldina Edmondson, as well as her children Shelley (Dave), Stephanie, Bruce (Amy), Sarah (Jack), and Sue (Ray) and her grandchildren Carmen, Myles, Taylor, Camille, Nicole, Austin, and Aidan, ages 28 to 12. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was lovingly cared for at home by three caregivers who treated her like their own mother. The privilege of remaining in her own home was planned for and provided for by her late husband. Many will remember her numerous acts of love and kindness as well as her delicious meals and her passion for babies. Donations in her honor may be made to the Salvation Army or Elizabeth House, both in Pasadena. Memorial service scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd at 10:00 at Sierra Madre Congregational Church, 170 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. in Sierra Madre. Cabot & Sons, Pasadena
