Alexene Garlitz, age 86 of Albany, was reunited with family and loved ones when Jesus called her home on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 22nd, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Dennis Patience officiating. Interment will follow in the Moran Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Saturday evening, August 21st, at Morehart Mortuary of Albany.
Elizabeth Alexene Rodriguez was born on December 11, 1923 in Albany, Texas to parents, Lee Roy Rodriguez and Maurine Smalley Rodriguez. Raised in Fort Griffin and Albany, Alexene graduated from Albany High School in 1941. She attended Texas Women's University and later Sul Ross State University where she received her degree in education. Alexene also did her Master's work at both, Sul Ross and Hardin Simmons University. Her teaching career spanned a total of 36 years, which included teaching positions in Aransas Pass, Berry Hill, Barnhart, Cosbyton, Hereford, Breckenridge and eventually her hometown of Albany, from which she retired. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Abilene Retired Teachers Association.
A strong Christian with unwavering faith, Alexene grew up in the First Christian Church of Albany with her family and upon her return to Albany she resumed her active membership, becoming an Elder of the church and representing them at various functions across the United States.
On December 31, 1952, Alexene married Otto Herman Garlitz of Moran. Otto and Alexene were parents of three children, Mary Reena, Delilah Elizabeth and Roy Herman. Otto preceded her in death in 1990.
Born in to a pioneering Shackelford County family, Alexene was immersed in the activities of Albany throughout her life. She was a cast member of the original production of the Fort Griffin Fandangle in 1938; and she participated in the Fandangle for over fifty years, originating the role of "Red Nellie." Alexene served as the Albany City Judge and in 1985 she was recognized for her service as Ombudsman for the residents of the local nursing home. Also, she was a longtime member of the Shackelford County Historical Society, the Lioness Club of Albany and the Albany Ex Students Association- faithfully organizing the annual Class of '41 reunions. In 1990, to honor her longtime service to her community, Alexene was given the title of Albany's "First Lady" by Beta Sigma Phi of Albany.
In addition to her husband, Alexene was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings and their spouses, J.F. Rodriguez and wife, Jean, Charles Rodriguez and wife, Billie and Mary Eva Black and husband, "Pinky" and an infant sister, Nancy Jane Rodriguez.
Alexene is survived by one son, Herman Garlitz of Eolian; two daughters, Missy Kennedy and husband, Sam of Summerfield and Dee Balliew and husband, Wayne of Albany; six grandchildren, Celina Flynn of Dallas, Brandi Kennedy of Abilene, Roy Henry Balliew and wife, Brandi of Albany, Spencer Balliew and wife, Lori of Abilene, Jeff Balliew and wife, Cari of Albany and Tim Balliew and wife, Candy of Albany; six great grandchildren, Sky, Slone, Ana, Max, Landon and Logan; one great-great grandchild, Tucker Balliew and a host of nephews and nieces who will lovingly remember "Aunt Sister."
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or The Old Jail Art Center and may be left at Morehart Mortuary. Condolences may be sent online at www.morehartmortuary.net.
