Robert (Bob to me then) and I met when we were 22-year old, new students at the University of Heidelberg - fall of 1959. He was a full foot taller than I, and we made quite an impression on the locals when entering one of his favorite bars or restaurants. Even then, he was full of good stories and good humor, and I enjoyed every moment spent with him. He could size up a restaurant instantly with a look at the menu and always knew what would be best to order. He made many friends of many nationalities while there. His love for the German language and culture was exemplary.
In the summer of '61 we returned to the US by ship and went our separate ways but stayed in touch by phone for birthdays. I visited him three times in the many years since and got to know Luanne, Lee, and David, all of whom he was justifiably proud. His death is a huge loss to me and to his friends in Europe.
