As one raised in Kilgore and whose mother had the honor and privilege to have Van in her Biology class at KHS, I hurt deeply to learn of his passing. While at Juilliard, Van came down to the pier in New YOrk City as my mom, Mildred Russell, was about to board the Queen Mary. The photo still exists, Mom, 5 foot one inch, beside Van, 6 foot four. I was fortunate to attend an after-breakfast impromptu concert, for five of us, on my mother's little Story and Clark upright. Mom worked with Rildia on civic music business, and on such occasions as her breakfast, she always asked Rildia if she could "borrow" Van when he was home from Juilliard. Many from Kilgore hurt with me, I'm sure.

Who other than Van Cliburn could have brought together in the same setting tributes, spoken or read or floral, from Imelda Marcos, the Richard M. Nixon Foundation, Vladimir Putin, George W. Bush, President Obama and TX Gov
Perry? The services for our musicial virtiuosa were eclectic with old Baptist hymns

I remember meeting Van Cliburns parents in New York City which is where I'm from. They gave a Stienway piano to my church which is Calvary Baptist Church in New York City. They were telling us about it. It was such a neat experience. This was in the early 60's. I grew up with a great appreciation for the piano. My mother was a great pianist from Europe. I would give anything if my mother could have heard Mr. Cliburn play. His talent was truly a gift from God.

Like many other Fort Worthians, I have lost someone who has been an inspiration to me for my entire life. Thank you for sharing your giftedness with others and for living your faith so authentically.

A lasting memory for me will always be when Mr. Cliburn came up to me at an event at which my organization was honoring a Fort Worth person for her conservation efforts a few years ago. He congratulated me on my speech, vigorously shaking my hand as he did so. This was characteristically generous behavior by him to people, and he seemed genuinely pleased when I said that I was merely trying to emulate him. Great people are always modest. I hope he will be able to play a celestial piano for eternity.
