Carl SALONITES Obituary

SALONITES, Carl Age 95, died on August 9, 2014 in Cameron Park, CA, with his family by his side. Carl was born June 6, 1919, in Berkeley, CA, and raised in Capay, CA. He settled in Woodland, CA, in 1958 when he married his wife of 53 years, Nadine Stuhlmuller Salonites, and moved to Cameron Park, CA, in 2012. Carl was a loving and loyal husband, father, and grandfather "Papa." His deep faith in God quietly guided him throughout his life. Carl started life as a farmer in the Capay Valley area, selling to the San Francisco and Sacramento markets. He attended Esparto High School, lettering in basketball. Carl later became a Resident Engineer for the Yolo County Engineers Office from 1953 to 1982 where he oversaw highway and bridge construction projects. Carl honorably served his country in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was an Army Sergeant in the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry "Buckeye" Division, 6th Army, and Chief of a M7 tank and crew. He participated in two campaigns and an assault landing, engaging in combat in Bougainville and in the Philippines in the liberation of Manila and Northern Luzon. Carl received the bronze star for his service. Carl was the greatest fan and supporter of his wife, Nadine, a well-known professional singer in Northern California. Together, they played an instrumental role in starting the Sacramento Civic Opera, and later became members and regional directors of the League of Historic American Theaters. The son of Greek and Swedish immigrants, Carl had a passion for his genealogy, his country, and the American dream. He loved to travel, especially in his car. Carl was ultimately best known for his "green thumb." His hobby was growing magnificent fruits and vegetables throughout his life. Carl routinely won blue ribbons and sweepstakes at the Yolo County Fair, particularly for the sweet, ten-pound bunches of table grapes that he grew in his backyard. Carl is survived by his son, Robert Salonites, his wife LaJean, their children, R. Conrad, Nicholas and John David of Cameron Park, CA; daughter, Carlene Salonites of Tulare, CA. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Stuhlmuller Salonites (2012), his father, Constantine Salonites (1963), his mother, Victoria Anderson Salonites (1976), his older brother, Eftimeos Salonites (2004), and younger brother, Constantine Salonites (2000). A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 4:00pm at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church at 600 Alhambra Boulevard, Sacramento, CA, 95816. The burial with military honor guard will be on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at 10:30am at the Capay Cemetery on County Road 22 in Esparto, CA, 95627. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Veterans Center, 1100 North Glebe Road, Suite 910, Arlington, VA, www.americanveteranscenter.org, a 501(c)3 organization, or a charity of the donor's choice.

We are so sorry to hear of Carls passing. He was such a gentle man. We became friends with him when we bought a home on west street and he helped us with our grape vines. Such a wonderful man. Our thoughts are with you and your family
