Upon hearing of the passing of this wonderful lady, I was flooded with memories. Those memories, for me, go way back in my childhood as far as I can remember. She was at the center of the heart of the "good old" 11th Ward. There wasn't much she was not actively involved with in the activities, and most especially the music, back then. She was my Primary chorister, my fellow Road Show cast mate, Choir director, and most importantly my piano teacher for almost ten years. But, she didn't just teach me to play the piano, she taught me to lead music, and eventually she helped me when I started teaching my own piano students. She was much more than a teacher, she was a loyal friend.

Three words immediately spring to mind that so fully describe her: dedicated, supportive, and generous (very generous). She was not only a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but she was quite totally dedicated in general. She was dedicated as a teacher and as a participant in all the functions that took place in those "good old days" of the 11th Ward. She supported every function, even down to the smallest meeting or event. She probably gave more wedding, bridal shower, and baby shower gifts than anyone I personally know. She was incredibly generous to all her piano students. In fact, I don't know how she even managed to earn a living from piano teaching since she gave so much back. She always remembered each student's birthday and gave wonderful Christmas treats, too! The only reason we all looked forward to our annual piano recitals was because of the fantastic and elegant spread of refreshments that were provided by her each and every year, all homemade by her. (She was a fantastic cook!)

She has impacted more people, I'm sure, than can ever be calculated. Some of my piano lessons were spent with her simply being a listening ear. She expected a lot of her piano students, but she was our biggest cheerleader in whatever we did.

They don't come along very often like this dear woman. Thankfully, she played such an important part of my formative years that I can use her example in my life and remember her so fondly. I'm deeply sorry that I didn't hear about her passing soon enough to pay tribute to her in person, but please know that I will continue to think so highly of her for the rest of my days. My thoughts are with you, her loving family, at this loss you are coping with.

My heart felt condolences to the Stilson family in the loss of a truly great lady. I grew up in the Kearns 11th ward and took piano lessons from her for several years. I remember her love and enthusiasm of music and I can remember in primary her leading us as we sang. I can still remember singing popcorn popping on the apricot tree. She led the music at both my parents funerals. What a great example of service she was. She will be missed.

Dear Stilson Family,

I grew up in Kearns 11th Ward. I sang in the choir for so many of those years. As I have grown over the years many of the songs that the choir sang have came back to me in times when I needed comfort or solace. The words of one of the songs that we sang hopefully will bring you some peace at this time.

Rest, rest to the weary.
Peace, peace to the soul.
Though life may be dreary,
Earth is not thy goal.
Oh lay down thy burden,
Oh come unto me.
I will not forsake thee,
I will not forsake thee.
Though all else may flee.

I know these words to be true, they have lifted my heart on many occasions.
May God bless you and strengthen you at this time. May His peace rest upon each one of you.

With love,
Ilene Aitken

What a wonderful lady. Always a big smile and a great laugh. She will be missed here on earth, but will be a great addition to heaven's choir!
