I applied for a number of jobs while attending BYU. I had decided against an opportunity working for Gene Harvey, but if memory serves me, I recalled that the reason there was an opening at Gene Harvey Chev, was because a Bob Schulsmeyer had retired. I thought it was odd that a car salesman had retired from working at a dealership for 30+ years so I went to visit Gene. He hired me on the spot, and I learned more about selling than I ever could at BYU from Gene and Ron, the Christopherson Brothers, Don Whimpey, Ned Anderson, Tom Basset and even Ole Gene Carson.

Great memories and training Gene! Thank you

Betty and Family
Gene was one of my idols my whole life in the car business. Our family has been GM Dealers since 1952. I always admired Gene Harvey and his unquestioned honest ethical conduct with fellow dealers and customers.

We have had many fun trips with you and Gene.

I just pause in disbelief when another of my friends depart.

It never gets easy to say .."until we meet again", to friends.

It reminds me that I'm nearly 'up to bat', my dad always said.

Belated note to you as I just learned this news.

I had served with Gene on various committees of the Utah Auto Dealers Association through the years and he was always a gentlemen and was very wise after several Dealers would perhaps discuss/argue about one issue or another. He would always then comment very calmly a solution to whatever the problem of the moment was and everyone around the table would say, "well, I didn't think of that" and we would agree and move on. Things were always friendly and fun with Gene involved. Then came the real test of our friendship when we bought the Pontiac, Buick, and GMC dealership in American Fork we were then all of a sudden competitors which changes the mood some and is some cases a great deal. I remember my Salt Lake attorney saying are you sure you want to buy this dealership, I know Gene Harvey and he is a formidable force especially in that town. Well, I was young and thought how could just a Chevy Dealer be that much trouble. Phew, he and his team were more than a formidable force in American Fork. Even GMAC the GM financing arm favored Gene. It only took a few years to realize that was a "force" we couldn't compete with, and Gene was even during those years a gentleman and offered to help by buying Buick [which GM turned down] out of our group as we were trying to sell after I surrendered defeat and decide to stick with our winning combination of Lincoln Mercury in Salt Lake. Things sure have changed since then with Mercury and Pontiac both going away, the government bailing out a couple of companies, and then the big corporate stores buying out the smaller family owned and ran dealerships. Gene weathered the storm always as a calm gentlemen and I will miss that cool thinking of his, and it was just an honor to have known him and serve with him at the UADA for our fellow Dealers. Rest In Peace Gene, no more factory telling you what to do and I am sure you are already holding meetings in Heaven calming everyone down.
