Dear Mario and Diane,
Im saddened beyond words to have heard from Theresa about the death of Armando. I remember him when he was little, when I had visited you in Colorado long ago. I read of the work he has been doing, and how clearly he was loved, cherished, highly respected nationally and internationally, and of his plans. What a lovely smile. Its hard to imagine what it is like for you, and there are no words. He was clearly a man who lived his life well, with passion, enthusiasm, humor, in service, and with much love. I wish I had known him as the man he became. He clearly touched so many people. My heart goes out to you, and my thoughts, love and best wishes are with you.

Mario and Diane,
I just found out on Friday of Mando's passing.
I don't think there are any words that can express my sympathy for your loss. I am here for the both of you, and my prayers will be focused on you and Mando.
I am so sorry. I didn't know Armando, but our daughter is a Grinnell alum and reading what an amazing person your son was has been inspiring and heartbreaking. Bless you. He lives on.
I was Mando's counselor at Palmer High School and will always remember his infectious laugh and deeply caring spirit. He was a young man of impeccable character who will be deeply missed by each of us who's life he touched. My sincere condolences to Mario and Diane.
Dear Mario and Diane
I've never met your son and I can't even imagine the sorrow you must go through as parents. I hope that you can find peace and comfort in the love of your family and friends.
In Deepest Sympathy.
Your tax preparer.
Mando was a young man of remarkable inner and outer beauty. His spirit was so rich that his loss feels as if it impoverishes not only those who loved him, but indeed, the world.
Diane and Mario: In this dark time, please be comforted by the joy and vitality Mando brought to so many others, and, too, by the exceptional gifts you gave him both genetically and through your loving attention as wise and devoted parents. You gave your son a wonderful life, the best any child could hope for. And from that, we all benefited, because Mando's very presence was an encouragement toward the best in human nature and an invitation to see the goodness and possibility that surround us. Such lives – however brief -- are a rare gift to all who are touched by them.
Many grieve with you, but thank you, too, for giving this struggling world such a bright and beautiful spirit.
my best memory .... Mando was at a Halloween party that my daughter hosted; he came dressed as Jesus and kept loosing his beard... we all had a good laugh. Mando always had us in stitches .. always the light in a room. He is now a bright light in the heavens. We love you Mando and send love and prayers to your family!
Mando you were an amazing young man with a passion for whatever you did. You will truely be missed by everyone whom you came in contact with. Your fellow co-workers here at Colorado College will miss you tremendously! Mario and Diane you will always be in our thoughts and prayers.
God cares for your family. Throw your burden upon him and he himself will sustain you.
Our son was friends with and graduated with Mando this past May. We did not know Mando, but our hearts break for you. We have said many prayers for you both since hearing of his death. May they, and the prayers of others, comfort you.
Mario, I don't know if you remember me but I was your student at CC. I was a non-traditional student and you took me under yor wing and had me and my family over for great meals and fellowship. Mando was a little guy then and I remember his curls and adorable personality. My sympathy is with you and Diane. Sincerely, Cathy (martinez) Sisneros Chung
Mando was a bright spot of my day, and one of the sweetest, funniest students I have ever worked with. My heart goes out to you and yours.
Diane and Mario,
We love you, we love Mando, our Mando. The outpouring of love and prayers tells us he was an amazing person. We knew this, I now realize so does the rest of the world.
My words for Mando
...a pure soul
Walked the earth for only a short time....
We love him
spellbound by his energy, joy, smile
AND THE CURLS!
We watched him grow
From Loteria to citizen of the world.
And the world took him.....
The person of Mando
Fully Brilliant in the loving embrace of God.
June 30, 2012
my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends.
May the Lord love you forever.
I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful son. I know that everyone who met you at the Folklife Festival is keeping you and you wife in their hearts.
Sincerely and with much love,
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Come back soon to finish what you began..
This is so sad. I can't even imagine losing my child and my heart feels for Armando's parents. May they have the peace of God that excels all thought.
When I think of your son, I remember the little boy with the most beautiful jet black curls and large expressive eyes whom we met at Pat and Arturo's home. My late husband Alfonso and I were so impressed with how bright and talented he seemed to be. I can imagine that platitudes will ring empty but judging from the comments I read regarding this trajedy, it seems to me that you both raised a beautiful young man who brought more joy in his short years than some people do in a lifetime. May the memory of his wonderful personality help to carry you through this most difficult loss. I will keep you both in my prayers.
Neida Ruth Soto-Grantland

I am so sorry to hear this tragic news. Being only 23 myself I can't imagin life being cut so short. My heart goes out to the Montano family at this difficult time. I can't imagine how broken their hearts must feel. It brings some comfort to know that we can all look foward to the time when God will wipe out every tear from our eyes and death will be no more; neither will mourning, pain, nor outcry be anymore. The former things will have passed away.
I was sadden to hear the news regarding your son. May you find peace and acceptance soon. We mourn with you
Siento en el alma la perdida de su hijo, que Dios les de paz y fortaleza en su corazon para soportar tanto dolor.
Mario, my most sincere condolences to you and Diane.
My most sincere condolences to the Montaño family, de parte de Cato Hernandez Jr & familia.
Our son worked with Mondo on the Scarlet and Black, and over the years his name simply became part of the Grinnell lore brought home and shared with our family. Now, we watch with supportive arms, but a heart wrenching helplessness, as our Grinnell/Colorado Springs contingency in St Louis grapples with the loss of a friend they hold so dear. Mondo's friends are such a testimony to his deep impact on this world, for each one of them has been forever enriched by his friendship. As parents, we mourn for and with you. What a beautiful child you have shared with all of us. With prayers, tears and offers of support,
To the family and friends I'm so sorry for your loss. Doing this time of stress the best thing to do is to draw close to God through prayer, and he himself will sustain you.
To mario and diane's families,
We were deeply saddened by the news of the loss of mandito. To us, it is a double loss: so many accomplishments at an early age (shows his determination to succeed and also strong parental support) and also, having known Mario since our childhood days in loma de la Cruz, eagle pass, tx. He left us while he was doing what he wanted to do.
Our prayers to the parents, Mario and Diane and to families of both. From the ramirez family
REST IN PEACE GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR FAMILY

I am a mother and mother-in-law of '06 Grinnell graduates and I accompany you at a distance in your loss. What a beautiful young man, what passion, what a life of good he had. May you find comfort in that smile and in the work he did in his life. Que diosita les de consuelo.
Came across Mondo's story and was compelled to read. Losing someone so young must be very difficult. Such lost potential. Will keep him and his family in my prayers.
My deepest condolences to Mandos Family. I came a cross Mondos obituary and was touch by his sucess in his short time of life, I'm sure by his doing he made so many people happy and proud. Sonia, Colton, CA.
You don't know me I'm Devon G. Pena's daughter but my husband and I wanted to extend our deepest symphany to you and your family. Your son from what I have read was an amazing young man and I'm so sorry for your loss.
I was introduced to Mando in the dining hall last spring, completely in passing. He always greeted me after that, with as much warmth as he would a good friend. He was a rare kind of person, one who touched everyone he met so easily and naturally. I hardly knew you, Mando, but I miss you.
Our daughter and Mando were in class together last fall. She felt kindred with him, especially as she is abroad this summer too. Now we all mourn your terrible loss as we struggle with the thought of beauty taken away and promise replaced by memory. We are thinking of you.
My very deepest condolences go to Armando's family. Armando made the world a better place to be living in. I hope his family will take comfort in knowing how wonderful a son they have.
Anne from Oakland, Ca
please know you are in our prayers; we will always cherish wonderful memories of Armando.
The extended Grinnell community grieves at the loss and wishes you condolences.
It's obvious that Armando touched so many lives in his 22 years. It brings tears to my eyes every time I look at this photo of him -- what a handsome young man, with a bright smile and sparkling eyes. To all his family members and close friends: I hope that through your memories of him and the thoughts and prayers of friends and strangers alike, his spirit will live on and you find peace in this difficult time.
Heartbreaking - my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. Diane

God bless this young man, and prayers to his family and friends. R.I.P.
I don't know why God would want to take him but he must have a reason. I just don't see how such a young and talented young man should be taken from his family. God speed!
Blessings, comfort and peace as you travel this journey. I know of Armondo, from my daughter another 2012 Grinnellian. She reports he was happy, positive, bright and just "such a great guy, we loved when he hung out in our house, I don't know why this would happen,he was going to do great things"...I reminded her yesterday, that it is obvious thruout the country, that he has already done great things, making a difference and touching many. Sending you love, prayers and comfort.

Why do the good always seem to die so young?
My heart goes out to Armando's friends & family. He graduated with our son, and my husband & I met him during some of the activities then. He was a remarkable young man, and we so much appreciate that he was in our lives, if even for those brief moments. You have much to be proud of, you raised a fine young man.
I did not know Armando, but by his picture and his smile he will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I will count myself lucky if my own two sons are anything like Mando. Please let us know how we can help you as you grieve, now and in the future.
Mando was one of the purest guys I've ever met. His energy for living life rubbed off on everyone he encountered. He had an ease of putting a smile on everyone's face around him. I will miss him. Mario and Diane, his parents, as well as the rest of his family are in my prayers.
My deepest sympathy to the Montano family. Losing a child is truly a tragedy.
I am so very sorry for your terrible loss. My daughter just finished her first year at Grinnell, your son was so loved and respected.
I was very sad to hear this, my heart goes out to his family and the people of Mexico who he valiantly tried to serve.
God Bless You, Sweet Soul.

I didn't know Armando, but reading his accomplishments I would have been so proud to be his parent. God Bless you both and give you strength to handle such a loss. He inspired to write to you because he reminds me of my children whom I love so much. In the picture his warm smile and his lit up eyes shows that he was a very happy young man. Sincerely FT.
I am the mother of a Grinnell classmate of Armando, who graduated with him just a month ago. I feel unbearable grief for your loss. Sending you love, light and blessings in this dark moment.
My thoughts are with all of Mando's family and friends which - I hardly realized - are spread across the country and globe. I found him to be delightful and I glad that so many others did as well. I feel lucky to have known him.
I did not know your son, but my heart goes out to you, as I too, am the parent of a recent college graduate and intern. With Armando's beautiful smile, be assured that he lit up every room he entered. He now lights the heavens as he watches over you. My prayers are with you.
I did not know your son but am writing as a fellow photojournalist and can only imagine your loss. My prayers go to you and your family.
I am so sorry for the loss of your son. His bright smile is awesome and I know you loved him dearly. He looks like the type of person that was on a quest to conquer the world! So young, so tragic. My deepest sympathy to the family and friends.
My prayers that may someway alleviate the pain from the family, friends, and those of us that are profoundly touched by this tragedy. We will never forget his dedication to journalism and his excellent personality. May Montano rest in peace.
I feel fortunate to have known Mando even briefly. His tremendous talents and spirit were a gift to us all.
There was and is no member of the Grinnell College community more respected and beloved than was Mando. He was a very special and talented man who is already missed beyond words.

Please know that others share in your loss and we send condolences and prayers for your loss. What a wonderful, outstanding man who made his mark in the short time he graced this earth. Know that while the tears may fall in the night joy will arrive in the morning. God Bless!
To Armando's parents, family, friends, colleagues...
Deepest sympathy as you endure the sudden loss of one who was so vibrant, who clearly touched all those who knew him and who was such a bearer of hope in our next generation. May you know the comfort of friends as well as the respect of those who neither knew him nor you personally but are drawn to you by the life he lived during his all to short time among us.
This is such a sad story God bless you all.
My heart goes out to his parents. No parent should lose a child!
My deepest condolences to his parents. He may not have lived long but he lived a great deal. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child in such a manner. I could spew platitudes and Christian-speak right now, but I just rather state that I know you have the love and support of his friends and coworkers and family with you. I wish all of you well and pray that something good can come from this, though I dont know how. I can only wish at my age of 45, that i had lived as much as this young man had. Such brave and bold souls are what makes this world worth being in.
