He was a good man!!!

In 1972, I was a new Records Clerk with SLCPD, and I typed his reports from verbal dictation on the BEST typewriter that IBM could ever make--a Selectric III. I couldn't spell police terminology in the beginning. Jim helped me and was very patient. I loved his sense of humor and kind, patient ways. Such a GREAT man!

See you again someday,

I worked with James starting in 1989, when I was hired in the police dispatch office. He was truly and officer and a gentleman. When he would come into dispatch, it was like he was a walking encyclopedia of police workings and where everything was in the city. I remember James being very detail oriented when it came to doing his written reports, by hand. He made sure he kept accurate records of his calls that he was sent on. He always had a kind word to say, and seemed to enjoy giving his advice and expertise about police work, to help me understand how, from the time I take a call for service, send an officer to the call, and what happens after the report is written. Salt Lake Police and Salt Lake City, was blessed to have this wonderful, kind, and thoughtful officer. I know he is finally happy, now that he is with his sweetheart in heaven. My final broadcast for you Officer Grandpre..C94...10-42..

I worked the accident squad with Jim back in the mid 70's. He was always a respected officer to work with. He had a humorous side that was there just under the surface.
In May, 1976 I had a fatal on the west side of Ensign Peak - I drove to it on a dirt trail which garnered a "to-from" to our lieutenant from Jim detailing how I had managed to get a passenger car converted to a 4 wheel drive all terrain vehicle. I still have that memo and every time I read it, it makes me chuckle with his originality and clear expression with words.
Rest easy friend.
