Von, I had lunch with Lanny around the time that it shows he passed away. I also tried to reach him after that. I finally decided today to try and find him on facebook or something and found this obituary!! I felt I had lost a part of me. He has always been there for me since I was 14 years old, even though we were not in constant contact. I loved him, did not always like him but I loved him, lol. He was my first love and always my love. I will never forget meeting him, he was calling radom numbers and some how got my mom on the phone "asked her if her frig was running" when she replied yes he told her "go catch it". They then talked and she told him she had a daughter and from there it was a life long relationship. The world is now a lot less interesting place. He always hoped my Dad knew that his life amounted to something and so I am sure that he let him know. Von, I am sorry. It looks like the services were wonderful and the comments show how amazing and colorful my Lanny was. xoxoxox Becky Allen

As I heard and read all the heartfelt tributes from Lanny's students, family friends and colleagues, I could not be more proud of him and how he touched so many lives...He was my Big Brother for over 55 years can you imagine how lucky I have been, and how saddened I am. We were having dinner celebrating his 63rd birthday and talked on many topics, movies, music...always music as we both love music, But then, he told me that he loved what he did every day, teaching his students...He said "You know Von, I'm Living my Dream every day"...To all the people he touched with his special magnetism, we were lucky to have experienced that...I thank everyone for their support...I loved Lanny very much and I am going to feel lost without him, we supported each other through some very difficult times and losses, I am going to miss him very much...Von Desmond

I pray that your heart will find comfort, and that you will be able to smile whenever you think of Lanny and your other family members. Seems we found each other through loss, and loss has defined our relationship.

I was fortunate to go to the community College with Lanny. He became a close friend and mentor. He was ahead of me and when he transferred to Weber State, he was kind enough to tell me that he was leaving a Board of Regence scholarship behind and if I hurried real fast to the financial aid office, that I could pick it up as I was also going to be a teacher!! I was able to continue the rest of my education at the University of Utah because of Lanny's thoughtfulness and caring! I owe him a deep debt of gratitude. I thank you and love you with all my heart, Lanny! Now, rest in peace! You have pleased God and man!

One day I remember was a Monday morning I was crying bad so I decided to go up to Desmonds room. When i walked in he looked up from his computer and said "Hey beauti... I mean Megan whats up?" I was still crying and said "Dez im broken" he didnt say anything he simply reached into his desk and pulled something out. I couldnt tell what he got but he told me to come here. I went to his desk and he said "Give me your arm" I gave him my arm and next thing I knew Desmond was rubbing a glue stick up and down my arm. I didnt know what he was doing besides getting my arm sticky so I said "Dez what are you doing?" He smiled and said "You said you were broken so im fixing you." I laughed and said thanks! Thanks for always fixing me Dez!

I have known Lanny since he started into education. I was his supervising teacher when he did his student teaching. He loved teaching Sociology, because it offered him an opportunity to teach values. The kids loved him and since then he and I had become very good friends, even though he taught at Ben Lomond and I teach at Ogden. He cared for young people. They loved him because he cared. He has left a legacy as to what teachers should be like. It not always about subject matter, but about the kids and the problems they face. He understood that well. He will be missed by his fellow teachers and the students whose lives he touched. Anomie (One of his favorite things to say to me everytime he saw me) He taught to avoid Anomie. What a guy!!!

Lanny, your funeral services yesterday were wonderful. Von, was great and conducted himself in a way that I am sure would have made you proud. And the youth, your students from Ben Lomond, were wonderful. I can see why after talking to them, why you are loved by so many. You would have been proud of the way they handled themselves Lanny. Lanny, they are our future. And after interacting with them yesterday the 12th of May, I have no worries about the future with them in charge. Lanny, you did good by them my Brother. I am very proud of them as I am sure you are. And oh! The Bag Pipe Band from the high school. One word: WONDERFUL!! Lanny, you set so many of our youth on the right path in life, and I thank you. I am as I said, not worried about them being in charge some day. God Bless you my Brother! Till we meet again. Thank you for loving and caring about me too. Boy! What a big Heart. Till we meet again. Kent Dunyon, Kearns, Utah.

Lanny was such an amazing man to my Mother in Law. He sat by her side every single night as she suffered from Cancer. When we lost her in January Lanny lost a huge part of him. He always put himself second to make sure she was taken care of. Von he always talked about what a wonderful brother you were and Allie he will always be with you. You were his light.

Mr Desmond. you are so great at what you do to have such a impact on ur students at Benlomond High. For the love you had for your extended family at BL and how they loved you also, beacause of ur patience and understanding and love to help until they grasped the concept that they were struggling with. I know this all to be true not because i was a student at BL High, but because i was a proud parent that had you going all out to help my kids that was struggling and needed extra help. you even came to our house to help my children or just to stop by and show your smile and to say hello. It was always a pleasure to talk with you at BL or in my home and several times that i ran into you around town. I my self gained a whole lot of respect for you for what you have done and not just for my kids but all kids. thank you so very muchfor what you have done for my kids and all your cares. God Bless you. may you rest in peace my dear freind. we will. miss you but never forget you and all that you have done for me and my children. again God bless you.

Mr. Desmond poem

one day you're here the next day your gone.
but at least your life has come along.
you helped students every way you could.
every one got the grades they should.
you made everyones day.
you made everyone laugh and smile.
you made the day all worth while. everything you say.
made me think about how I want to spend my life.
everyday you hleped me with school work. you explained the stuff over and over. then some how i got it.
you said stuff that made it easier.
you loved mine and megan's poems.
you even let us put them on the wall.
every day I think about you.
every memory and thing we do.

Mr. Desmond was a wonderful teacher, friend, loved one who had the spirit to make anyone overcome their challenges and trials in school and life. He helped those who needed help and helped others who needed help but were afraid of asking for the help. Mr. Desmond also loved those who weren't his, and loved those who chose not to love themselves either because they didn't know how or didn't want to. Either way, he still loved us all. He took time out of his time at work as a teacher to sit down and listen to those who needed and wanted to be heard, as well as those who didn't want to be heard they still were heard. He helped students understand the importance of school and life. Mr. Desmond will be greatly missed, loved, and respected for everything he has done and always will continue to do in the memories of those lives he has greatly touched and impacted. I will miss Mr. Desmond very much. But his memory will always stay with me. Mr. Desmond helped make an impact on my life as well as others lives. GOD BLESS Mr. Desmond and know he will be cherished always amongst us alumini and current students as well as those he's impacted outside of work. We miss you Mr. Desmond.

Lanny, My Brother. I am sure you remember back in the day when we were younger, the concert we went to at The Hollywood Bowl. Wolfman Jack, Canned Heat, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, War, Lea Michaels. Yeah back in the early seventies man. The concert was supposed to get out about eleven O Clock that evening, but the bands kept playing till about three in the morning. Dude, I will never forget that concert and the time spent with you there. Remember when we would go out on payday and buy all the latest music? I don't know who had the bigger collection of wax other than you and I. Thank you for the memories My Brother. I love you with all my being. Kent Dunyon.

May 10, 2012

Lanny, My Dear Brother. I don't have the words to say how I feel. You were an amazing man. You and I go back many years. We did a lot of cool things together when we were younger. When we all lived on Appleton Blvd. in Long Beach. Those were fun cool days man. I remember how on our days off from work, we would spend our time cruising up and down the Pacific Coast Highway giving people hitch hiking, rides where ever they wanted to go. Then, we would all pile up in the car and drive to Salt Lake to the City County Building across from Dees Hamburger place, and have a burger, fries, and a coke. Then we would hop back in the car and drive back to Long Beach. Fun days man.We had lots of good times back in the day man. I love you, and miss you allready now more than I can say. Till we meet again my Brother! Kent Dunyon, Kearns, Utah.

I am very saddened to hear of Lanny's passing. What an awesome teacher and person he was. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him at Ben Lomond and at many school events. He knew students by their name, followed through on what they were doing, asked questions and listened to them, and most of all truly cared if they were a success. He connected with students others could not. What a loss to this world and to Ben Lomond. Lanny - I am glad I had the chance to know you.

Mr. Desmond was always helping and caring of the kids at Ben Lomond. When ever you needed his help, he was always there to help get it done. He always put postive thoughts in students minds and never gave up on anybody. Even if students who didn't have him as a teacher asked for his help, he would never walk away. Thank you Mr. Desmond for being such an amazing teacher! We love you and you will always be missed!

Von, sorry for the loss of your brother. It is so hard to loose someone you are so close too. If your brother was anything like you he was pretty cool.
Take care.

Thank You to the person who wrote such a lovely obituary for Lanny. Lanny was passionate about teaching and about life and he did it all in his own very special way. He was the ultimate advocate for students who were down and out. He raised them up and gave them hope. I am honored to have been able to count him among my friends.

Lanny Desmond was a wonderful teacher who loved and enjoyed his students. It was a privilege to know him and work with him. He used creative and unique ways to help his students understand math concepts as well as to master other subjects.

There are many many students that have benefited from his caring instruction, and many others of his colleagues who have loved and enjoyed knowing and working with Lanny.
