Mark Reale Obituary

REALE

Our brother Mark Reale went home to be with our Lord this day January 25th 2012 after a long battle and complications from Crohns disease. He is survived by his father Anthony Reale and was preceded in death by his mother Frances Reale. Mark was born June 7th 1955 in Brooklyn New York at a time when rock and roll was flourishing with many new sounds. Early in his life, his first interest had been the movies. Ever so curiously, he had shown an interest in films. But then, songs he heard on the radio began to change that. He quickly began to love music from the Beatles and Cream. Mark lists George Harrison and Eric Clapton as great influences. When he was 7 years old his grandfather bought him his first basic guitar to practice on and later his father bought him a new guitar and amp, his passion had begun.

In the early to mid 70's his influences included the likes of Edgar Winter, Ronnie Montrose and Rick Derringer. He also loved a range of bands and artists from Al Di Meola to Deep Purple. In 1975 Mark formed his band RIOT, then at a block party Mark's father found vocalist Guy Speranza. Mark's guitar style and his passion for writing songs that told stories that were so deep and moving had made a real connection with those who would become lifelong fans. The fans felt so connected to Mark because the lyrics in RIOT's songs were extremely close to the stories of their own lives. His song writing style could weave tales of anything from old lore to battle fields and warriors, personal loss and triumph. And heavy metal anthems that will be with us for decades to come.

The brethren of brothers that Mark spent his life long career in music with and whom he leaves behind or joins in heaven are, Guy Speranza, L.A Kouvaris, Kip Leming, Peter Bitelli, Rhett Forrester, Rick Ventura, Jimmy Iommi, Sandy Slavin, Tony Moore, Don Van Stavern, Mike Flyntz, Pete Perez, Bobby Jarzombek, Mike Dimeo, John Macaluso, Bobby Rondinelli, Mike Tirelli, Frank Gilchriest and Damon Di Bari who was always like the "6th" member of the band being Riot's lighting director / production manager / tour manager and Mark's personal assistant from 1988 through 2008. Mark's final days were spent with Damon at his hospital bedside, sharing the fans' thoughts, well wishes and prayers. Even though Mark began his career in New York, San Antonio was a special place he loved and not only lived here for a while but had planned on moving back here to make San Antonio his permanent home.

With heartfelt thanks to the fans around the world, the United States, Japan, Europe and all points in between. The RIOT army meant everything in the world to Mark, it's what kept him going. The loyalty and love of the fans fueled his passion and desire to continue making music for as long as possible. Please keep the Mighty Tior in your hearts and the memory of Mark alive within you.

Shine on, Mark shine on!

(an album more precious than gold).. After that I became a fan of RIOT eversince.. none of their albums failed to disappoint me.. When I heard of Marks death, I felt like sum1 has taken a very precious thing from me.. I will neva hear Mark's music creativity again.. :( .. If i listen to IMMORTAL SOUL, I feel as if Mark knew it was going to b his last album.. R.I.P. MARK!!.. i listen to ur songs almost every day n will neva stop listning to it. . :)

I discovered Riot a few albums into their career with the title track to Born In America. I was COMPLETELY floored and went on to discover several more albums naturally out curiosity. They were THE REAL DEAL from NY and one of the original stylists of the American hard rock/metal genre that rode the crest of the wave at the dawn of the 80's.
I unfortunately never got a chance to see them live with Mark. His legacy of music and memory will live on forever through his family, fans and the band mates that he left behind to carry on all things re: Riot.....R.I.P.....Mark Reale gone but never forgotten.

Can't believe this sad news, or how long it's taken to find out. I first saw RIOT open for AC/DC On the HTH tour, the next year one from our bunch of a band i worked with at the time met Mark at the Razzle Dazzle club and invited him over to our rehearsal space to jam a bit And to our surprise he showed up! He jammed a few times, told us tales of the road, and wowed us all with what he could do on his candy apple red Strat. I gave him a ride home that night, and was so impressed by what a truly nice guy he was. Very quiet and soft spoken, he let his guitar do most of the talking. We met again several years and tours later, and I was priveleged to photograph the band and do a small write up about them. Mark hadn't changed at all, his perseverance and dedication to keep RIOT going through some lean times had a lot to do with the loyalty and dedication of his fans, (I met people who had flown in from Tokyo to attend a biker concert in a field in Poteet once that RIOT headlined) especially his Texas fans was very much appreciated by Mark and the many musicians who played with him through the years.

Also, the quality inherent in the body of work that Mark produced in his life will stand the test of time, and all of us who loved him and his music will continue to enlighten others, young and old, to the beautiful music that came from the soul of this amazing and brilliant musician.

Rest in Peace Mark, we will never forget you.

Mark, although I did not know you, I feel as though I did and it hurts because I feel like I've lost a friend. Your incredible music has been a constant companion to me throughout the best and worst of times. As I mourn your untimely passing, your music will be a great source of strength and healing. It will be uplifting to us all even though we have heavy hearts. Thank you for your incredible contribution to my life. Thank you for remaining steadfast in flying the metal flag. You were truly an artist of the highest order and a first class soldier for this music that means so much to us all. I can never thank you enough, but I will always be grateful and think of you as if you were still here because your legacy will live on forever. So long, brother.

I have been a loyal RIOT fan for almost 30 years, since discovering them at age 15. Mark's playing immediately became a major influence on me. Not only did he become my favorite guitar player of all time, but in my opinion, also one of the best writers, and song creators. I was never lucky enough to meet Mark, but I still feel a great loss in my life. He was a legend to me, and I will keep his spirit alive listening to his music for many years to come. His passing is truly a devastating loss.

It's amazing how a man I have never met can make me feel such loss at his passing. What a testament to the power of his music, the way it can touch the soul. Although Mark never met me, I have met and known him through his music. My deepest condolences to the family. Seeing Mark had a funeral Mass, I hope the family finds comfort in knowing God's presence at such times of grief and loss. God bless you all. Rest in Peace, Mark.

R.I.P. Mark, and thanks for the music. I've seen 256 concerts, but one of my fondest is getting to see the already legendary RIOT on the Born in America Tour. Thank you, you made life a LOT more tolerable as a teenager, with your music, and still make me happy to this day, as a 44 year old man.
