Barbara Jean Mullen March 21, 1929 - November 18, 2015 SOLANA Barbara Jean Mullen (nee' Harrison) passed away peacefully at her home in Solana Beach where she resided more than 44 years. Barbara was born in Rockford, Illinois, the only child of Dr. John Alden Harrison and Florence Mary (nee' Minshall) Harrison. She attended Rockford schools and went on to attend the prestigious Stephen's College in Columbia, Missouri. While at Stephen's College she earned her solo pilot's license in 1948. Barbara moved with her parents and young family to La Jolla, California in 1951 where her father, an oral surgeon, maintained a private practice for many years. Barbara is survived by her four children: Rebecca Jean Wright, James Randall Wright, David Harrison Board and Mary Ann Mullen Walker; eight grandsons: Louis Dylan Peden, Harley Davidson Board, Steven James Board, Erik Thomas Board, James Alden Wright, Andrew Ruffin Wright, John Christopher Mullen, and Benjamin Samuel Walker; two step-grandchildren: Tamara Dudley Williams and Ryan Dudley; as well as eight great-grandchildren. Her husband of 48 years, John Howard Mullen, passed away in 2006. Barbara, a lineal descendant of Mayflower pilgrims John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, was a long-standing member of the Mayflower Society of California. She was an avid gardener and had a special affinity for succulents. She loved music and adored the countless pets she cared for throughout her life. Private family services will be held at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery where she will be interred beside her late husband. Barbara's family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Carmen and Philip Rueda, her caregivers during the last four years of her life and to all the nurses and caregivers from Ardent Hospice, especially Elena, Victor, Sarah and Tasha.

I always have happy memories of helping Barbara in the kitchen, laughing, and sometimes just being silly! Barbara was always loving and I could share my thoughts, and always a hug when I needed it! Love you Barbara

Barbara was always so easy to talk to and laugh with. We had fun sharing cooking tips in her kitchen and going out by the pool to look cute, get a little sun and laugh about, well, things! She was a beautiful friend and my mom, Lorraine, loved to laugh together sometimes too! And don't forget her smile!! Linda

Whenever I saute sliced mushrooms for steak or hamburgers, I think of Barbara! She showed me how to prepare this extra special topping and was such a delightful hostess. Barbara, John, Becky, Jim and David spent a few days with us while waiting to move into their Clairemont home. They, of course, later moved to their more permanent Solana Beach home. Her dad, Dr. Harrison was a fine dentist and a fine gentleman. REST IN PEACE!

Sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. She was a distant cousin. Her thoughtfulness was well known in my family as she sent beautiful flowers/plants to my grandparents each year. I had the pleasure of visiting her in California with my mom. We enjoyed hearing about family history and getting to know our cousin better.

I spent many nights sleeping on the floor in Mary's back bedroom. She was always welcoming and kind. I loved her yard and all the nice flowers. I especially loved all her dogs, little foxy being one of my favorites. She was a great mom and was always there for her kids. Glad she passed peacefully at home. Love and hugs to all.

I have so many memories of Barbara's beautiful garden and the 100's of animals through the years but the one that sticks out the most, and I have no idea why, is when Mary and I were going to a concert (Foghat?) Barbara went to the closet and pulled out an envelope with Mary's name on it and cash in it and doled out the funds for the evening. I thought that was the coolest thing ever :) RIP Barbara, you were loved and will be missed by many

Barbara and I worked together at the La Jolla office of SDG&E in 1957-58. She was always a kind, caring friend and we later became friends with her fiance, John Mullen. Phil and I were honored to be matron of honor and best man at their small San Diego wedding. We shared many good times with them and remember watching Saturday night roller derby together on those small black and white tv sets. Barbara was always a gracious lady and lovingly watched our then newborn son, Jeff to give us some time off. Jeff actually retired from SDG&E last year.
May Barbara rest in peace.
