Candace Anderson Obituary

Anderson, Candace Marie RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIFORNIA -- Candace Anderson, 66, of Rancho Santa Fe, passed away on February 19, 2014. Candy was born May 13, 1947, in Ray, Arizona, to John and Lucille Anderson. With her pioneer heritage and deep Arizona roots, Candy developed a mental and physical toughness that permeated her multi-faceted life. Reared in Phoenix, Candy was named Salutatorian at West High School in 1965, where she was creative, witty, and well-liked. Throughout her life, she remained close with a loyal group of friends called "The ThunderChicks." Candy completed her undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in 1969, which included a study year in Austria. By 1977, Candy had earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Bio-Medical Engineering from Rice University in Houston, the first woman in their School of Engineering. Candy moved to San Diego in 1978 and worked as an engineer/scientist at Orincon, SAIC, Linkabit, and Motorola. She taught university-level courses at San Diego State University and the University of California at San Diego. During her brilliant career, she was granted numerous patents. Candy spoke three foreign languages, enhancing her travels throughout the world. She hiked from guard tower to guard tower on The Great Wall of China, scaled the Sydney Harbor Bridge on a windy day, rode crocodile-infested river rapids in Costa Rica, and crawled to the top of windmills in The Netherlands. Candy is survived by her husband, Donald Becker of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; son, Bowen Dillman of San Diego, CA, daughter, Kelda Becker of Billings, MT, stepdaughter, Ingrid (Darin) Floyd of Scituate, MA; sisters, Alexandra Anderson of Phoenix, AZ and Carolyn (Dennis) Lee of Prescott, AZ; niece, Tamara (Gary) Thompson, and nephew, Brandon Lee. She is preceded in death by her brother, Josiah Anderson. A memorial service will be held on March 8th at 2 p.m. at El Camino Memorial, Sorrento Valley Chapel in San Diego, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Candy's name to The American Cancer Society (ovarian cancer research) or a charity of your choice.

Candy amazed me at Stanford - a girl studying engineering? This was astonishing to this New England girl, her classmate. Condolences to all the family and know that she is remembered far and wide by those who may have known her only a little time. Sincerely, Anne Makepeace

I met Candy in 1st grade and we continued our education together through West High. Judging by Candy's brilliant career, she apparently absorbed more than I did. We shared fascinating conversations as we walked to school together after my family moved to 17th Avenue (3 houses down from the Anderson's) after the 5th grade. After high school we went our separate ways, but through fellow classmates & reunions I would hear of Candy's not surprising successes.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Candy's death. I want all of Candy's family to know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of the Hollar family. Our sincere sympathy.

My very deepest sympathy to you, Don and family, as you mourn the passing from this life of dear Candace. I had the privilege of working with Candy at SAIC and the pleasure of calling her Friend. May the memories of sharing her love, intelligence and wit keep you all close during this difficult time and in the years to come.
