Ellis, Edmund In Loving Memory SAN DIEGO Edmund Ellis died in August, 2013. He was born and raised in an orphanage in San Francisco during the depression. After graduation from Junior College, he obtained a Congressional Appointment to the United States Naval Academy, his childhood dream. During his 32 years in the U.S. Navy, Edmund served on four destroyers, a miscellaneous auxiliary, Navy Special Weapons Unit in Albuquerque, commanded an LST, a destroyer, Landing Ship Flotilla One and for a short time, was Commodore of Amphibious Group Three. His final tour of duty was on the staff of Commander Amphibious Forces, US Pacific Fleet in Coronado from which he retired as a Captain, USN. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with combat device, the South Vietnamese Distinguished Service Medal, Second Class, and numerous campaign ribbons. After retiring from the Navy, he volunteered and coordinated reunions of the Navy Academy Alumni for 15 years in the western area of the U.S. He served his church in many capacities and gave generously to those in need. He never forgot his early years in poverty. While still a midshipman at the Academy, he reestablished contact with a girl he had known at the orphanage. He and Lucille were married following his graduation and had four children. They traveled the globe together in the service and after retirement. Lucille passed in the late 80's and after a few years he remarried. He and wife Harriet also enjoyed many travels together. He lived a long, full life, even dancing at his granddaughter's wedding shortly before his passing. While predeceased by both wives and his eldest son Mark, he is survived by three children; three grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and numerous step-children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A memorial service to commemorate his life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013 at St Mark's United Methodist Church, 3502 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, CA. Donations, in lieu of flowers, are appreciated to the Clairemont Christian Service Agency (CCSA).
