Lucia Kanchenian's powerful intellect impressed all who knew her. She did much for the history of Romanian folklore and contributed a remarkable collection for display in the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park. This, perhaps, is her greatest legacy.

Lucia was a brilliant scholar, generous benefactor to the needy, and a "cultural carrier." She came to Lemon Grove in 1973 and speedily became a well-regarded member of the neighborhood and a distinctive part of the town's immigrant heritage. She rose above a life marked by tragedy (the loss of two husbands) and the horrors of the Ceaucescu regime in Romania to become a noted folklorist whose extraordinary collection of Romanian folk art lives on in the Mingei Museum of World Folk Art, Balboa Park. The Lemon Grove Historical Society is proud to have Romanian textiles and carvings bequeathed by Lucia.
