Vera S. Watson ESCONDIDO -- Vera Watson was born November 9, 1925 in Owatonna, Minnesota, to Oscar and Myrtle Splittstoesser. She died peacefully July 30, 2015, after a brief illness. At the end of her sophomore year in high school, seeking better employment, the family moved to El Cajon and lived for two years with her Aunt and Uncle. Her parents both worked for Convair, building aircraft for the military. Vera graduated from San Diego High School in June, 1943 and also worked at Convair for some time. In 1946, Vera and the family returned to Minnesota, where she stayed for about a year. Returning to southern California in 1947, she and her sister, Bernice stayed with her Aunt and Uncle again, this time in Ramona. Working as a waitress in the Santa Maria Cafe, she met Warren "Jack" Watson. They soon married in April, 1948. In 1950, Vera and Jack started their family, raising three boys and later, adopting two girls. Vera's life was full of activity,with the boys in Scouting, many outings to the Anza-Borrego desert for camping and off-roading, trips to National Parks, and in later years, extended family trips to Puerto Penasco, Mexico to camp on the beach. Vera loved cooking and gardening throughout her life. At 79, she went whitewater rafting and hot air ballooning. Vera was a volunteer for the Palomar Hospital Auxiliary and retired this past February after 57 years of service. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey in 1980; and her husband, Jack in 1996. She is survived by her children: sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Carolyn Watson; and Scott and Beverly Watson; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Reginald Rawdon; daughter Kristi Peters. Grandchildren are Amber Sanders, Summer Watson, Kimberly Watson, Heidi and Stephen Greiner, Joshua Watson, Samuel and Trevor Rawdon; and Great-Grandchildren are Stephen Sanders and Ethan Greiner. A Celebration of Life is planned for Monday, August 3, at 11:00 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Escondido.
