This is sad news that has only lately reached us in Alabama. Dr. Dills' name is known to local historians in Courtland, AL, a town adjacent to where he attended Basic Flight school during early 1943. He was a member of the very first cadet class to graduate from Courland - Class 43-E. We have an exhibit/memorial dedicated to him in the town history museum. Unfortunately, I only knew him briefly by virtue of help he provided through his excellent memories of Courtland Army Air Field and his experiences there. What a sharp mind! This was most helpful to us as we prepared historical markers for the site. His strong character was instantly recognizable, and left a lasting impression on me. Dr. Dills, thank you for your service.

I never met Charles however I made contact with him after finding his web page. I told him about my taking flying lessons, He said I'd never forget my solo flight. I am now 91. From what know of Charles I am honored.

Charles was an amazing person and was not only a mentor of mine but became a special friend. Without his help, guidance and inspiration, I would have not every finished my chem class, senior project and graduate from Cal Poly. Every time I think of him, or our conversations, a huge smile always appears on my face and in my heart.

I'm very sorry to hear that Chas, as he called himself, passed away. I knew him from the Bromeliad hobby since 1993 and had a lot of correspondence with him about names etc. He was a remarkable man. Charles, rest in peace.

Mr. Dills was always a charm to talk with when he would visit my desk when I worked at the credit union.I knew right then he was a man of exceptional intelligence, charm and humor. He lived a full and complete life and is an example of humanity for us all.
