He was a CPT and I was a SGT (later a CWO) in the Cal Guard, we both played the guitar, our families were friends back in the mid/late 70's. I remember having a dinner or two at his and Betty's house, that he was refurbishing on his own in Morro Bay. Lost track of him and Betty until this day. I have thought of him and Betty often over the years. Johnny was a Great American, a Patriot, and a friend - our deepest condolences..

I had the pleasure to serve under General Gong. He was a outstanding leader and mentor and a kind person. I salute you for your service to our country and your caring about our soldiers.

John, you are gone, it is something which I did not want to know. I had been looking for you John since 2006, after you retired and went back to your home state "The Great California", but unfortunately I got very busy and felt myself as I am an ignorant and a selfish friend who did not do much to keep in touch with you. But John, you might have been gone so far where nobody has returned but John you have not gone out of my memories, you would live there forever as my Best Friend and Mentor. I will miss you for rest of my life. I wish somebody from your family can contact me and make share my memories which we both had about our childhood life's similarities and we used to talk a lot.

R.I.P. Brig. Gen. John Gong, "Honor Bound to defend Freedom".

John was a mentor, a friend, a man of his word, and a fellow Christian. He was a leader that could be firm, yet gentle at the same time.

John promoted Barry to Lieutenant Colonel and asked him to emcee his celebratory dinner upon his promotion to Brigadier General--we have the utmost respect for John and heartfelt condolence for Betty and family.

We'll see you in Heaven, John!
