I worked with Larry in my first 'real' job, in the Natural Sciences Business Office and Dean's Office from 1981-1983. Larry was Dean Bill Doyle's right-hand man. He was funny, pragmatic, and kind.

I once thought I was doing a terrible job - I definitely struggled from time to time as a clerical worker not far removed from having graduated from UCSC, with my intense shyness and lack of previous work experience - and that, as a result, Larry hated me. I went into his office and told him that. He handed me a paper clip, as an offering ... and told me I was doing fine. I will always love him for that!

At some point, I also filled in for a time for the Dean's Secretary, when she was on maternity leave and was clearly over my head: imagine a jeans-wearing early 20s guy with little social experience trying to screen callers and juggle appointments! Larry had the wisdom to find someone to temporarily share that role with me: Judith Van Slooten, who had worked with Gregory Bateson in one of her past lives. Judy helped me learn by her example, and her company helped make the job tolerable and even fun. I don't know how Larry knew her, but both of them seemed - and still seem to me - very wise and kind people, with a beautiful sense of humor and perspective.

I remember Mr.Maxcy when he came into Safeway during the 1970s. He was often carrying a sweet baby boy. Condolences to that child and the rest of his family.

I knew Larry when we both worked at UCSC, he was very good friends with my husband, Carlos Sandoval. Larry and Carol were kind and generous friends, I will always remember them fondly. Larry's dry wit got us all through a lot of hard times.
