There is a land where we will never grow old. Each and every time that a familiar flower is plucked from the garden of life we look back on yesteryear with a wee bit of sadness. The past two years have claimed our days of Camelot. On the world stage since the early 1950's were the members of the Kennedy Family. During those years and beyond we came voyeurs into the lives of everything Kennedy. The voyeurism extended into the life of Sargent Shriver and his beloved wife Eunice. The Shriver's managed to weather the storms with great Dignity and Grace.
Today is a very somber day in deed as we bid a fond adieu to man who perfected the art of caring for his fellow man. By all accounts Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver were the perfect complement to each other’s ideals; they became the voice for the needy and passed that trait on to their children. Sargent Shriver has been a name in my vocabulary for more than 50 years and it was a name that I first associated with being the husband to Eunice Kennedy and then the leader of the Peace Core. Then he became the leader of what has become known as; “The War on Poverty”. I would follow him through his fail attempt as a running mate with McGovern as well as his short lived run for the presidency. None of that really mattered because Sarge was our hero as a champion for the disenfranchised in our nation and the world. I will forever refer to him as “Our Sargent Shriver”.
To the Shriver children please keep your light burning brightly and thanks for sharing your parents and your noble family at-large with all of us. I can only imagine how you must be feeling today as you lay to rest your father who is now reunited with your mother somewhere up there in the air at the round table of grace in that ultimate Camelot where every day is Sunday and Sabbath has no end. You will see them again, though we know not when for you have miles yet to travel before you sleep. I pray that the Grace of God will be shown round about you and that you are cradled in the arms of the Angels until you have the strength to once again go it alone with God by your side.
