I saw today's paper just now and was sorry to learn of Mrs. Neidlinger's passing, but was pleased to see she had 93 years in this life, and lots of family & friends to enjoy life with.

I got to know her briefly sometime during the fall of 1975 or spring of 1976, when she worked at the old C&S Desoto Bank downtown (the site of the first ATM machine in town). I had recently returned to Savannah from five years in Athens, and brought with me a checking account I had with C&S in Athens, which was conveniently located across from the UGA Campus. When I moved back home, I asked them what did I need to do to move my account here, and was told all I had to do was fill out a change-of-address form, so I did. Some months later, when I was almost out of checks & reordered them, I crossed out my Athens address & noted my Savannah address on the reorder form. I also crossed out "Athens GA" underneath where it said "C&S Bank" and wrote "Savannah" instead. I got my order shortly, and began using the new checks when my prior ones ran out. But I still had deposit tickets left, so used them instead of the new ones. Then I got a call from Mrs. Neidlinger one day, wanting to know if I "had an account" with C&S Bank? Puzzled, I said, I sure do! For five years. She said C&S in Savannah was getting my checks, but didn't have any deposits to match up with them. Puzzled, I explained about "moving" my account from Athens, and later ordering new checks -- that's when the light bulb went off. I didn't know about "bank routing numbers" back then. Turns out the check printing company had changed the bank routing number on my order, so when I used my old deposit tickets, my deposits went to Athens, but my checks came to Savannah! Janet was kind enough to "fix it" for me, and I have laughed about that many times since. And she was helpful to me on several other issues after than. I am glad to have had the chance to get to know her a little bit.
