As I meditate at this time upon memories of Shirley Miller I am reminded of the Biblical scripture, Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them (Matthew 7:20). The chapter as a whole speaks of discerning false prophecy from that which is divinely-initiated and authentic. But it also addresses metaphorically what it means upon departing this world to leave a legacy of good deeds and works.

The good deeds Shirley labored to bestow upon her community and her family were many. So were those with which she blessed my individual life. When I lived far from Savannah she served as a gracious intermediary between me and my father. In the years after I returned to the city, she was among the healthcare professionals who helped me take care of my mother at home. And in addition to that, she and Kenneth performed the gracious service of once a month presenting my mother with communion at home. There were other times when she simply stopped by to visit and through conversation we encouraged each other in our various endeavors.

To my way of thinking and from my individual experience, she demonstrated love in a truly Christ-like manner because she did so by assisting in people's healing, by teaching them, feeding them, and affirming hope for a better life in a better world. These were the nourishing fruits of the spirit by which I can say I knew her. Such beautiful souls are rare in this world and I was given wisdom enough not to take her for granted. I remain grateful for and humbled by the blessings of love and kindness she bestowed upon my life.
