It is no surprise that you lived, loved and laughed. I knew at my first visit to your farm in 1988 that you and your family were special people. The trip to the baby chicks pen with Erica on the farm was a unforgettable moment in time. Love, B & B Claussen
When we met in the fall of 1986, during my first trip to the farm with Kathleen, I was immediately touched and charmed by your great kindness.
Your calm and serenity was a true contrast with the hustle and bustle of the house in St Paul and with ever-active Gerry.
With Gerry, I always thought you formed a special couple, like yin and yang, complementing each other in many ways.
I admired your patience when handling just about any situation, big or small. Even when posing for photos -- no wonder why Kathleen gets so frustrated when taking pictures of us.
As a farmer you had both feet firmly planted on the ground, and a lot of common sense.
Your simplicity in a world where materialism prevails was refreshing. You kept wearing the same simple clothes, so packing your suitcase to come and see us was easy.
I admired the handyman you were; capable of fixing anything and everything and we all know you were kept busy!
Without fuss you kept adding more tasks on the “to do” list. You always kept your note pad in your shirt pocket.
Your faithful correspondence to family and friends is almost a lost art in these days. I know that Kathleen treasures all your letters.
You were a good companion to travel with. I remember our first road trip with you back in 1993, Kathleen, Yarra and Dennis across country from Minnesota out to Seattle for a Pflepsen family reunion. We really had a good time.
We enjoyed listening to you talking about your time in the Navy sailing in the Pacific when you were hopping from island to island aboard your LSM or when you were stationed in Japan. Your experience in the Navy must have been when you developed your interest for traveling.
Discreet and reserved you had your times of frustration but I cannot remember you expressing any outright anger.
We will miss you but will always remember you as our model of kindness especially when malice overwhelms us.
Peace be with you, Vern.
Love from Eric, Yarra and Tristan
